New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1933. Black hardcover cloth binding with red lettering and white line illustration is a bit shaky but secure. Bumped corners, rubbing along spine, wear bottom of spine. Rubbing top RH corner of front cover. Both front and back inside hinges are cracked with threads showing, front more than back. Foxing throughout. Nearly every page has closed tear of about an inch at the bottom near the gutter. One of the last pages showing a polo player was torn in half and has been neatly repaired with tape on the blank side of the illustration. This page also has some closed tears and wear to top of page. Name in ink ffep. This is from a limited edition of 780 copies of which 750 were for sale and 30 for presentation. Yellowing pages, some foxing, but overall clean interior. 261 pages. Many b/w sketches throughout by noted artist Paul Brown. Scarce book about a dog, part Irish Terrier in the text but all Irish Terrier in Brown's drawings, who worked his way into the affection of an army company during World War I. No dogs are supposed to be on the transport, but Mike manages to be on it when it reaches France. Both author and illustrator were with the AEF. Square and tight - clean bright and tight interior. 164 pages with plenty of Paul Brown line drawings throughout. This is first in two book series, second is George and His Horse Bill Go West. Bill was born out west and shipped east with others from his ranch to be sold at auction. His face is too long, his ears are too big, and even George, who falls in love with him, has to admit he is ugly. But Bill is tall, and strong, and gentle, and brave. George is recovering from an illness, and has not been told he can ride Bill yet, but then again he has not been told he can¿t. Terry goes to visit her horse crazy cousins and is hurt that they seem more interested in the new mare Cassandra than in her. Two pages of basic drawing figures on stiffer stock of paper in back of book intact. These pages were made to be removed and used for drawing, so they are often gone from the book. Rare dustjacket has closed tears and shelfwear along edges, but overall in nice condition. Protected in mylar jacket. Front endpapers is a steeplechasing scene. Back endpapers show a polo match. Unpaginated. Clear and concise drawing instructions geared to make the aspiring artist comfortable with plungeing forward and putting pencil to paper. Lots of sketches and full drawings with explanations. Shows lots horses and dogs, but also still life, people, and skiing, boxing, tennis, and football.
