Descripción:
Philadelphia: Hubbard Bros., 1880. First Edition. . Hardcover. Very Good/No Jacket. This biography of President Garfield represents a publishing puzzle: According to Brisbin's biographer, Benjamin Foster, Brisbin published his Garfield biography with the title, "From the Towpath to the White House, a Biography of James Garfield," in 1880 in Philadelphia, and also in 1880 in Hartford as "The Early Life and Public Career of James A. Garfield." In 1881, following Garfield's assassination, Hubbard Bros., the Philadelphia publisher, re-issued the book with additional material under the name William Ralson Balch, an editor and journalist, who had covered Garfield's political career and assassination. However, the new edition did not mention Brisbin as author, Balch being credited as sole author, a stance he maintained throughout his life though, according to Foster, his claim was denied by the Library of Congress. Subsequently, our copy of the book was issued, titled on the…

New York: Knopf, 1992. First Printing, First Trade Edition. . Hardcover. Fine/Near Fine. The award-winning Updike's 15th novel features Alfred Clayton, an historian who has received a request from a professional society for his memories of the 1974-77 Gerald Ford administration. "Alf" obliges with memories of a turbulent period in his personal life and with pages of an unpublished book he was writing at the time on the life of James Buchanan, the 15th U.S. President. The alternating texts offer a startling contrast between the life styles and social manners and mores of Americans in two different centuries. Boards and text are clean, tight, square; a tiny, quarter-inch tear on the upper edge of the fold between the front panel and flap, and a faint "shadow" on the front flap where a price sticker was removed, o/w the dustjacket shows very minimal surface or edgewear. Descripción:
New York: William Morrow & Co., 1940. First Edition, First Printing. . Hardcover. Very Good/Good Plus. This is the second of six novels written by Clune, who worked as a reporter and columnist for the Rochester, NY, "Democrat and Chronicle" for over 55 years, dying in 1995 at 105. While his first novel, "The Good Die Poor," was a cynical, realistic story of a newspaperman caught up in corrupt city politics, his second is a satiric comedy that could only happen in America. It features Chester Willoughby who decided the radio ads for his furniture store's clearance sale should be used for a series of inspirational talks. To his own and everyone's amazement, Chester turned out to have a radio voice, one so hypnotic it didn't really matter what he said. It wasn't long before the Willoughby Brotherhood League began whispering about Willoughby for President. Both corners on front cover lightly bumped, o/w orange cloth-covered boards and text are clean and unmarked,…
