Foreign investors flocked to buy Texas land in the 1880s, most either went broke or at best broke-even, and only a few prospered. British cattleman Alfred Rowe managed to thrive in the Texas Panhandle, founding his RO Ranch in Donley County and the city of McLean in Gray County. Rowe met his death on the ill-fated Titanic ocean liner. As new.

Early children's story set in Fredericksburg, Texas, at Easter time. "The story goes that in the very early days a family of pioneer children were frightened on Easter Eve by seeing Indian campfires on the hills. Their mother quieted them. Oh, no! she said, not Indian fires, but rabbit fires burned there outside the town. The Easter Rabbit was coloring his eggs, she said, with kettles of flower-dye boiling above the flames they saw." From that day forward, there have been fires lighting the town of Fredericksburg on Easter Eve. A lovely little book, printed on light orange, light pink and yellow pastel paper with charming illustrations. Limited to 400 copies. A facsimile reprint from the only known copy of this tragic narrative. Rachel Plummer was captured by the Comanches during their raid on Parker's Fort in May of 1836. Her cousin, Cynthia Ann Parker, was captured at the same time. Rachel Plummer endured 21 months of captivity before being returned to her father's home in Texas where she died exactly 1 year later having never recovered from her ordeal. Fine copy. Author's second book, a powerful novel about a WWII Army transport corrupted by a strange and evil man. Makes The Caine Mutiny sound like a pleasure cruise, and evoked comparisons with Conrad and Melville from the critics. Signed copies of the author's early books are scarce.

Brochure advertises "miracle waters" that will "prevent more bodily ills than a modern drug store" and can be enjoyed along with tennis courts, a fine dance floor, and sumptuous meals. Although the actual radium content of these springs was (fortunately) quite low, promoters were not deterred from capitalizing on the early 20th Century fascination with radium's alleged power to cure rheumatism, high blood pressure, gastric ailments, alcoholism, and more. The brochure provides a chemical analysis of the waters, asserting that "the radium water you drink acts like a million little suns giving off the Alpha and Gamma rays, which act as tonic, stimulating the tissues, the glands, the nerves, and the internal organs."
