Occasional pencil 'X' notations. A rather convoluted publishing history to this auction catalogue, with multiple editions having been produced. All twenty-four days included. London: Smith and Robins, Printers, King Street, Long Acre, 1842. First edition, 4to, pp. xxiv, 250; mounted lithographic frontispiece portrait of Walpole by G. Madeley after Eckhardt; woodcut title, vignettes in the text; original cloth-backed blue pictorial wrappers creased and worn; spine ends chipped, good and sound. Tipped in at the front is a printed slip from W. Forster, "of No. 4 Lower James Street, Golden Square" who "begs leave to inform the Nobility and Gentry that, by the kind permission of Mr. George Robbins, he will attend at Strawberry Hill during the whole of the View and Sale, and will be happy to undertake the commissions of those who may be kind enough to favour him with their commands." Part of the preface is a description of Strawberry Hill by W. Harrison Ainsworth. At the end (p. 250) of the volume is an admission that this present edition carries inaccuracies, all of which will be rectified in the second edition.

Later 19th-century brown cloth spine with original boards. Engraved cover title: A Catalogue of the Contents of Strawberry Hill. Engraved title page. George Robins, the auctioneer, advertised the sale to begin on April 25, 1842, and continue for 24 days. However, the original plan to sell some of the prints, drawings, and illustrated books in large lots was altered, so the contents originally proposed for the seventh and eight days of the sale were withdrawn, recatalogued in smaller lots, and sold later. As many as 7 editions of the catalog are known. This edition includes descriptions of contents through day 24, omitting days 7 and 8; the 6th day concludes with lot 160, omitting the Waldegrave manuscripts (originally lots 161- 187). It does not include the "Names of purchasers and the prices" sometimes found on 58 pages at the end.… Leer más
