In spite of this lengthy disclaimer, this is in fact an attractive book. This is one in the series of "Small Oxford Books." Tomalin, the compiler, pulls together writings from a nearly 500 year span, ranging from a Venetian envoy to the court of Henry VII (1497), who remarks on the lack of affection English parents manifest toward their children, to Margaret Drabble, Alison Lurie, and Michael Frayn.
