FIRST EDITION. This work on Albert Einstein's theory of gravitation contains a foreword by Einstein. Freundlich is best known for his attempts to experimentally test the general theory of relativity using astronomical observations based on the gravitational redshift.Freundlich worked as an assistant at the University Observatory in Berlin at the time he published this work. In 1920 he moved to the Astrophysical Observatory in Potsdam, where he was director from 1921-33

The first printing of Hawthorne's "Little Annie's Ramble," Hawthorne's fable of childhood innocence. After the main character's "ramble" through town with young Annie, he reflects: "Sweet has been the charm of childhood on my spirit, throughout my ramble with Little Annie! Say not that it has been a waste of precious moments, an idle manner, a babble of childish talk, and a reverie of childish imaginations, about topics unworthy of a grown man's notice. Has it been merely this? Not so; not so. … As the pure breath of children revives the life of aged men, so is our moral nature revived by their free and simple thoughts, their native feeling, their airy mirth, for little cause or none, their grief, soon roused and soon allayed. Their influence on us is at least reciprocal with ours on them." The story is unsigned in the present volume, credited only to "The Author of 'The Gentle Boy.'"

FIRST EDITION. Presentation copy inscribed by Einstein's longtime assistant Helen Dukas: "For Lisa Ben Samuel with kindest regards and Shalom Helen Dukas Princeton N.J. March 1980."
Helen Dukas became Einstein's secretary in 1928 and, after his death in 1955, served as a trustee of his literary estate and archivist of his papers. This volume prints letters and documents selected by Dukas over the years to shed light on Einstein's character and personality.Original cloth and dust jacket. An important early offering brochure regarding the sale of the first modern compass and early navigational aids. This is a price list and an extensive collection of reports and testimonial letters from ship captains concerning Thomson's sounding apparatus (the first to use wire instead of hemp) and compass.
"The modern compass dates from 1876, when Sir William Thomson patented his dry-card compass" (Singer, History of Technology
V). Thomson was deeply interested in the application of science to industry, and he apparently prepared this rare, ephemeral publication to promote his products, which helped to make him a wealthy man.
This brochure includes a detailed price list for Thomson's navigational instruments.19 leaves, printed rectos only, stapled as issued. Some soiling. Very good.

Two volumes. Original purple muslin, printed paper spine labels. Spines sunned, rubbed labels stating "Cooper" in an early hand. Faint damp stain at end of vol 2. Slipcase. An excellent set.
Fine first American edition of Cooper's historical novel about Christopher Columbus's first voyage. The Coopers had returned to America in the 1830s, but James continued to explore European influences and settings.
Lea and Blanchard published this work in the year that they issued Poe's first collection of fiction, Tales of the Grotesque and Arabesque, which appeared in an identical binding.

The edition that Thomas Jefferson owned. Jefferson wrote from Monticello in 1817, "While I was an amateur in Agricultural science (for practical knowledge my course of life never permitted me) I was very partial to the drilled husbandry of Tull."
Jethro Tull's invention of the seed-drill helped bring about a revolution in agriculture. "By contour ploughing, drilling his seed at wide intervals, and using his horse-hoe to destroy weeds, Tull was able to grow wheat on the same fields for thirteen years continuously without manuring" (ODNB). "The practices of drill-sowing and frequent hoeing are the greatest improvements which have been introduced into the modern practice of tillage" (McDonald).

The Zimbalist copy of The Weal Reaf, printing "Letter from Hawthorne" for the first time, from the 1860 Essex Institute Fair at Salem. "Letter from Hawthorne" appears in nos. 2 & 3 (5 & 6 September 1860). Framed as a letter to "My Dear Cousin" who has requested a story, he explains that since writing Twice-Told Tales and Mosses from an Old Manse, "my mind seems to lost the plan and measure of those little narratives, in which it was once so unprofitably fertile. I can write no story, therefore; but (rather than be entirely wanting to the occasion,) I will endeavor to describe a spot near Salem, on which it was once my purpose to locate such a dream fiction as you now demand of me." He goes on to describe "that conspicuous hill" which once known by Browne's Folly and a nearby mansion with a haunted closet. FIRST EDITION of this standard work on the history of Chinese currency. Edkins was a British Sinologist and Protestant missionary who spent 57 years in China, 30 of them in Beijing. Edkins published a much shorter book, totaling 29 pages, under the same title in 1890.

Original printed wrappers. Light spotting, small chips to backstrip ends. An excellent copy. Half morocco case.
First edition. A rare association copy of the pamphlet which began Lowell's career as an author. Lowell had been elected class poet and scheduled to read his composition on Harvard's Class Day in July 1838. However, he was suspended from the college due to his neglect of studies and general obstreperousness and was consequentially unable to perform this office. Instead, his classmates subscribed for the printing of the poem and it was ready by August of 1838, in time for commencement. The front wrapper is inscribed by one of Lowell's classmates. Within just a decade, he would be one of the most distinguished and influential men of letters of letters of his time.

Each number publishes the result of the author's survey of science fiction writers, editors, and aficionados concerning the likelihood of space travel for humans.

FIRST EDITION. After reading Leaves of Grass, 17-year-old Sadakichi Hartmann sought out and befriended Walt Whitman, who became a mentor. This volume recounts their conversations. The poet declared, "I have more hopes of him, more faith in him than any of the boys."
Son of a German diplomat and a Japanese woman, Sadakichi Hartmann later achieved minor fame as a photography critic, friend of a range of modernists, poet, Bohemian in New York, and actor and bon-vivant in Hollywood.

FIRST EDITION of this classic in the history of quantum mechanics, "Planck's Law and Light Quantum Hypothesis" (pp. 178-181 in vol. 26).
Bose sent this paper to Einstein, who translated it into German for this initial publication with the comment "In my opinion Bose's derivation of the Planck formula signifies an important advance." In this paper he "succeeded in deriving the Planck blackbody radiation law without reference to classical electrodynamics. Einstein's generalization of Bose's method led to the first of two systems of quantum statistical mechanics, known as the Bose-Einstein statistics. Paul Dirac later coined the term 'boson' for particles that obey these statistics" (DSB).

FIRST EDITION, first British issue, comprising the American sheets (1883) plus a new section (pp. 237-255), Dowden's work on the English critics of Whitman.
"An unconventional book, as much anthology of documents about the poet as a biography. It was also a collaboration; Whitman advised throughout, revised Bucke's text, and wrote significant portions of the book himself" (LeMaster, Walt Whitman, An Encylopedia). Bucke was one of Whitman's three literary executors.

FIRST EDITION, second printing, first issue. Thomas Harned's copy, with his bookplate. Whitman's friend Harned was one of the poet's literary executors, alog with Horace Traubel and Richard B. Bucke.
David McKay at Rees Welsh, Whitman's new publisher following the Boston Leaves of Grass controversy agreed to publish this autobiographical work, which Whitman called "the most wayward, spontaneous, fragmentary book ever printed." McKay took over the firm in 1882 and used his own name in the imprint for the second and subsequent printings.
The book includes "not only Specimen Days but also many of Whitman's other prose writings, including Democratic Vistas, his essay on the "Death of Abraham Lincoln," his various prefaces, and the prose stream from Two Rivulets. Surprisingly, Whitman also decided to include some of his early and long-forgotten fiction and pre-Leaves poetry. opened on February 8, 1968 and ran for 283 performances at the Theatre Royal Haymarket. The production starred Isabel Jeans, Daniel Massey, Helen Weir, and John Standing, among others.
