From the blurb: "Most people own some books, and many possess documents, but few are aware of the best conditions in which to store them. Old books are very fragile and even new books can quickly deteriorate in the wrong environment. This booklet outlines the ideal conditions under which books and documents should be kept, explains the principle [sic] causes of damage and offers straightforward, practical advice on how to avoid them Those who wish to preserve their own books and documents or who have charge of a small library or archive will find this an invaluable handbook. Weidenfeld and Nicolson, first paperback edition, 1992. Laminated illustrated wrappers, 8vo, 24 cm,. 263 pages, 21 plates, ills. From the blurb - "This is the first genuinely new account of Blake's life for more than 50 years. Unlike earlier biographers, James King stresses the close connection between the man and the mystical and symbolical worlds he created, and he gives equal emphasis to Blake the artist and the poet. Blake was a revolutionary with a unique vision which led him to create his own philosophy and mythology. He was a Christian who despised Christianity, a recluse who longed for fame, a man with deeply divided feelings about sexuality and aware of dark inner forces that threatened to conquer him, but against which he did battle. In James King's concise, critical biography these conflicts are fully discussed for the first time. King links the growth of Blake's imagination to the pictures and the poems in which he dramatised his inner struggles; he reveals the fullness…

British Library, London, first edition, 1978. Printed patterned wrappers, 4to, 25 cm,. 96 pp, ills (some colour). 98 entries. Catalogue of an exhibition held in the King's Library, British Library Reference Division, 9 August-22 October 1978. "The Officina Bodoni, the distinguished private press founded and operated by Giovanni Mardersteig (1892-1977), has over the last half century produced books of outstanding quality which are admired and collected by connoisseurs of fine book printing. In Montagnola and since 1927 in Verona, Mardersteig, following the tradition of the scholar-printers of the Renaissance, printed on the hand press close on two hundred books, most of which are discussed in this detailed study. Some were edited by Mardersteig himself; some illustrated by noted modern artists; all are remarkable for their impeccable presswork, carried out either by the printer himself or under his close supervision. The earlier books of the Officina Bodoni were, by special permission,…

J. M. Dent & Sons Ltd, London, first edition, 1982. Cloth, 8vo, 25 cm,. xv, 512 pp, [32] pp of plates, ills. From the blurb - " When the darkness of mental illness closed over his last eleven years, John Ruskin had established himself as an extraordinary presence in Victorian England. This prominence, and its attendant private troubles and anxieties, form the centre of this absorbing new biography. Although his parents wished him to have a distinguished career in the Church, Ruskin himself opted for a life in which he could travel, read, collect geological specimens, study works of art, draw and maintain his role as critic and commentator. His energies and output were prodigious, despite the interruptions and distractions of social life and the unhappiness of his own marriage to Effie Gray. Throughout a public career as writer, lecturer, social reformer and eventually Slade Professor of Fine Art at Oxford University, he never lost his determination to connect and relate his many interests,…

Michael Joseph, London, first edition, 1971. Cloth, 8vo, 22 cm,. xix, 468 pp, plates, ills. From the blurb - "In Rossetti and the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, Professor Fleming presented a full-length study of one of Britain's most controversial group of artists, the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, from its formation in 1848 until its dissolution in 1854. The author now concentrates on the careers, following the end of the Brotherhood, of the three principal Pre-Raphaelites, who were strikingly dissimilar as artists and men: the rigidly uncompromising Holman Hunt; the enormously popular John Everett Millais; and the fascinatingly independent Dante Gabriel Rossetti. Primarily the story of 'three lives', the book also traces the course of Pre-Raphaelitism during the middle and late Victorian years when it was not sustained as a formal organization, and it presents a vivid picture of an important and colourful era in British art. Among the secondary figures the most important and ubiquitous…

Cambridge University Press, Cambridge, 1996 reprint of 1989 first edition. Laminated illustrated wrappers, 8vo,. xiv, 297 pp. From the preface - "This book, as its title suggests, is intended to provide friendly and helpful company for any student of Milton. .What follows.. is not a series of homogeneous encyclopaedia articles but eighteen original essays by eighteen different human beings who care about Milton, who would (and do) disagree with each other about innumerable issues, and who seek in an informative, responsible, often argumentative way to say something important about a subject they love. Unfortunately, this book does not include discussion of all of Milton's works, nor does it exemplify every major critical approach; such are the limitations of a single volume. But each contributor has been asked to try to do in a modest way what Milton himself so consistently does: by means of a particular style, angle of vision, or argument to encourage critical thought, further study, and a…

Hamish Hamilton Ltd, London, first edition, 1977. Cloth, 8vo, 23 cm,. xiv, 281 pp, [8] pp of plates. From the blurb - "Tom Moore has been unjustly neglected. He was Byron's favourite friend and wrote the first Life. His melodics are still among the loveliest songs in the language. Sir John Betjeman has recently said that some of his lyrics are better than Byron's. Apart from this, the entry of a grocer's penniless son from Dublin into Regency society is a unique success story. Moore said of himself that he was something of a show child. Tiny - he never grew to more than five feet - he charmed all who came his way. He was contributing poetry to magazines at thirteen. In Trinity College Dublin he made a figure, and took part in debates with Robert Emmet, against whom he refused to give evidence after the Rebellion of 1798. While in Trinity he made translations of Anacreon. With these in his pocket he went to London, aged 20. Within six months he was made free of the London…

Bibliographical Society, London, first edition, 1988. Printed wrappers, large 8vo, 30 cm,. xi, 86 pp, ills. From the text: "...it can be shown .. that Henry Woodfall excelled in book auction catalogue printing, and a study of auction catalogues and booksellers' catalogues for the period 1715-1730 shows that firstly Richard Brugis and then Henry Woodfall were dominant in that field of printing. The requirements for a printer where auction and bookseller's catalogues were concerned were: speedy work, accurate quotation of titles in Greek, and modern languages, and intelligent proof-reading. Only a few printers could meet these stringent requirements, and so it is little wonder that a few printers were regularly used by the London booksellers. Woodfall's book catalogue-printing began in 1720; his share of the market rose above 50% in 1722, and generally did so up to 1730. Near Very Good.
