405x277 mm. Text within a typographic border. Woodcut decorative initial. Traces of folding, restorations along the folding, some foxing, all in all well preserved.
Celebratory broadsheet printed on the occasion of a dinner party given by the vice-podesta of Brescia Andrea Cornaro (or Corner), containing a laudatory sonnet signed by Pietro dalla Curte.
Andrea Corner, born in Venice in 1610 into a noble Venetian family, became a member of the Maggior Consiglio at only 20 in 1630. He had a very successful and long career as a politician, diplomat and galley captain, both in Venice and in the Venetian islands. On February 6, 1668 he married Marina Barbaro, widow of Girolamo Corner, who brought him a dowry of 6,000 ducats. On July 14, 1669 he was elected podesta in Brescia. He made his entrance in town in January 1670. Among the various problems connected with the administration of a territory as vast and relevant as that of Brescia, he had to reorganize the local possessions of the Church, to provide new… Leer más

8vo (164x106 mm). [12], 371 [i.e. 373], [63] pp. Collation: A-EE8. Repeated in pagination the pp. 163-164. The last leaf is a blank. Colophon at l. EE7r. Printer's device on title page and l. EE7v. Light marginal staining and foxing on a few leaves. Outer margin of the title page soiled. Contemporary cardboards, spine covered with a later colored paper, lettering piece on spine (panels slightly soiled, minor losses to spine). A bit loose, but a very good copy, uncut with deckle edges.
SECOND EDITION of the 'Lives of the Doges" by Pietro Marcello in the translation by Lodovico Domenichi. The first edition of this translation, the only one ever made, was printed by Marcolini in 1557 for Plinio Pietrasanta. Basically, Marcolini's name appears only in this second edition, which differs from the first for small changes in the dedication to Giovanni Priuli and for the addition of some final Latin verses by Bernardo Giorgi.

THE TABLE OF CONTENTS AS AN EDITORIAL PROSPECTUS
4to (195x144 mm). [24] leaves. Collation: A-F4. With the woodcut arms of the city of Verona on the title page. Late 18th-century red morocco, panels with gilt floral borders, gilt edges, decorated endpapers (a few scratches). Some very light occasional foxing. A very good copy.
VERY RARE FIRST EDITION of the table of contents of a comprehensive chronicle of the city of Verona, intended by Canobbio to show the plan of his Historia intorno la nobiltà e l'antichità di Verona, to which he worked from 1577 to 1604 and which should cover 3436 years of history of the territory. The work was never finished, only the present index and a summary, Breve compendio cavato dalla sua historia di Verona (1598), were published during his lifetime. Apparently the manuscript of the larger work got lost (cf. A. Viviani, Alessandro Canobbio e la sua opera storica, in: "Nova historia", VII/1-2, 1955, pp. 42-52).

Early 20th-century half vellum, double lettering piece on spine. Some marginal staining, small loss to the outer margin of a few leaves without loss. A very nice copy, uncut with deckle edges.
FIRST COLLECTED EDITION. Atanagi's Delle lettere facete was first published in Venice in 1561. Atanagi had planned a second book, but his work on it was interrupted with his death in 1573. The material was gathered together and published by Francesco Turchi on behalf of Aldo Manuzio two years later in 1575. Both volumes were printed together for the first time in Venice by Altobello Salicato in 1601.
Both books were put in the Parma Index of 1580, but not in those published in Rome in 1590 and 1593 (cf. J.M. Bujanda, R. Davignon, E. Stanek, M. Richter, eds., Index de Rome: 1590, 1593, 1596, avec étude des index de Parme 1580 et Munich 1582, Sherbrooke, 1994,… Leer más

FIRST EDITION of the second attack of Henri Estienne's on Ciceronianism. The first was published a year previously under the title De latinitate falso suspecta expostulation (with an appendix on the style of Plautus). The last volume of his critic, aimed especially at Mario Nizolio's Thesaurus as a kind of bible of Ciceronianism, appeared as Nizoliodidascalus, sive Monitor Ciceronianorum in 1578.
"Il est hors de doute qu'à un 'degré zero', pour ansi dire, de lecture, il s'agit d'un exercice promotionel: fustigeant les incorrections des éditions de Cicéron d'un Bade, d'un Lambin, d'un Manuce, et de tant d'autres, Estienne ne fait que souligner, par ricochet, la qualité des siennes. A URBAN TRAGICOMEDY
FOR THE WEDDING BADOER-CONTARINI
12mo (134x73 mm). 65, [1] leaves. Collation: A-E12 F6. The last leaf is a blank. Printer's device on title page. Roman and italic types. Woodcut decorative ornaments and initials. Later flexible vellum. On the last leaf verso manuscript dedication "Alla Serenis.ma Sig.ra Palazzina Anconitana" signed with the letter "G" and followed by the drawing of a heart within a square. Some light marginal staining.
Rare first edition of this tragicomedy in five acts in verse dedicated to Giovanni Badoer on the occasion of his wedding with Maria Contarini.
In the dedication, dated Venice, 20 September 1597, the author states that with this play he introduced something new into drama by bringing love stories far away from woods and rivers (i.e., pastoral and piscatorial dramas) and setting them for the first time in a urban landscape (Rome is the scene): "nel prendere argomento io della mia favola, Cittadino, & nell'introdurre Città, e Cittadini, forsi non ho… Leer más

RARE FIRST EDITION (it was reprinted in 1558 and in 1560). The publisher Guillaume Rouillé (1518?-1588), who, starting with an Italian translation of De viris illustribus urbis Romae, published at the Sign of Venice in Lyons during his life over seventy book in Italian. These were addressed not only to the Italians residing in France, but also to the many Frenchmen, who had learned Italian in the course of war, study, or business. Rouillé had apprehended the book business in Venice with Giovanni and Gabriello Giolito and established himself at Lyons in 1543. His book production exceeded that of Robert Estienne, Gryphius and de Tournes, and his learning at least equalled theirs. His firm gained European reputation and his books… Leer más

Ownership entries of a certain Luigi Bernini. Wormhole in the last 3 leaves with loss of text, two small emblems stamped on the title page, a bit browned, but genuine.
FIRST EDITION, second issue, of the first draft of the Secchia rapita, the most successful mock-heroic poem of Italian literature. Composed between 1614 and 1618, the work first circulated in manuscript form, immediately attracting the attention of the Inquisition. After several (sometimes illegal) attempts to have it printed in Modena and Padua, Tassoni was forced to go to France to avoid ecclesiastical censure. It was through the efforts of Jean Chapelain, a friend and collaborator of G.B. Marino, that Tassoni's poem was eventually printed in Paris in late 1621. Of this first Paris edition three issues are known. Almost at the same time, a counterfeit, probably printed in… Leer más

4to (178x134 mm). [6] leaves. Collation: A4 B2. With a woodcut illustration on the title page. Later boards. On the front pastedown bookplate Ex-libris Franz Pollack Parnau. Slightly uniformly browning, a good copy.
FIRST EDITION. Presented as a 'Practica', i.e. a booklet containing astrological predictions, it is in reality a mocking poem on the genre, about which Rasch holds forth in even greater detail in his Gegenpractic of 1584.
In the rhymed dedication poem to Duke Albrecht V of Bavaria Rasch mentions two of his works to be published, his Weinbuch (1580) and the Cometen Buch (1582).
Under the woodcut on the title page is a Latin citation on predictions from Lucas Panaetius, a humanist from Ulcinj (Montenegro) active in Venice, probably taken from his prefatory letter ad- dressed to Rosello de Rosellis printed in Caesar's Commentary (Venezia, 1511).
For him there are three kinds of prognostication: there are first of all, prophecies for no specific year, perhaps dealing with the end times, but… Leer más

A BELGIAN HUMANIST TRAVELS THROUGH ITALY
4to (217x157 mm). [8] leaves. Collation: A-B4. Printer's device on title page. Early 20th-century half cloth, some light browning, a fine copy from the library of Abel Lefranc.
VERY RARE FIRST EDITION of this speech held on October 25, 1540 in the Collège de Sainte- Barbe in Paris. In it the Belgian humanist gives an account of his travel to Italy. In autumn 1539 Latomus was granted leave to visit Italy at the king's expenses. Over Lyons and the Mont Cenis he attained Turin and continued to Milan, Brescia, Padua (where he listened to the lectures of Alessandro Sozzini and met the scholar Lazzaro Buonamici), Verona, Venice (where he attended the lectures of Giovanni Battista Egnazio), Ferrara (where he was welcomed by Renée de France and where he met Celio Calcagnini), Bologna, Florence, Siena and Rome. In Bologna, where he is documented on February 11, 1540, he appears to have received a legal doctorate. On his way back to Paris he passed through Basel,… Leer más

This is one of the copies without the leaflet with a supplementary poem pasted on leaf F1r (basically, beside this copy, only two of the five known copies have this addition). On the title page ownership's inscriptions "Conventus S. Wenceslai Egrensis" and "Ex libris Joannis Sedleckij". Contemporary limp vellum (soiled), ties, new endpapers, some light damp stains throughout, but a good copy.
FIRST EDITION. Soon after the death of the humanist and poet Konrad Celtes in 1508, the Collegium Poetarum, which was called into being by him in Vienna and which had the right of conferring the laureateship, came to an end. Efforts were made in the middle of the century to restore the Collegium, especially by some influential imperial councillors such as Jacob Jonas, Georg Sigmund Seld, Sigmund von Herberstein and Georg Eder. It was finally re-established in 1558 under the head of Nathanael Balsmannus, a member of the Collegium Archiducale.

RARE FIRST ITALIAN EDITION of one of the most important documents for the history of political and educational thought of fifteenth century Humanism. It was begun around 1462, completed in 1468 and first published by Jean Savigny in 1518 under the title De institutione reipublicae libri novem. It has often been seen as a precursor of Machiavelli's Principe and had a great influence on Thomas Elyot's Gouvernour (cf. J. Schlotter, Thomas Elyot's 'Governor' in seinem Verhältnis zu Francesco Patrizi, Freiburg/Br., passim).
The work covers the whole field of civic Humanism discussing all questions of… Leer más

Rare first edition dedicated by the author to the Count Giulio Cesare Nogarola.
Pescetti was born in Marradi in the Apennines between Tuscany and Romagna around 1556. After studying in Florence, he moved very young to Verona, where he devoted himself to teaching and literary activity, earning a good reputation, until the end of his days. RARE SECOND EDITION, edited by Filippo Pirogallo and by him dedicated to Alessandro Vercelli.
The edition contains the same poems as the first 1538 Parma edition (overall 145 poems including 9 by other authors), with the addition of the stanze Quando miro la terra ornata e bella by Veronica Gambara, here called Stanze aggionte and wrongly attributed to Vittoria Colonna (cf. V. Colonna, Rime, A. Bullock, ed., Bari, 1982, p. 259).
In 1539 Colonna's rhymes were also printed in Florence by Zoppino and twice in Venice (by Salvioni and allegedly by Zoppino or Troiano). These editions are easily distinguishable from the present because they bear either a trefoil or a woodcut border on the title-page. According to Bullock (op. cit.), they are slightly later since they all amend in the dedication… Leer más
