Illustrated throughout. "The men who opened up the North and West of the American continent, hardy adventurers though they were, could not possibly have traveled through and explored the Indian lands without contact and help from the Indians they encountered along the way. To close the immense gap between cultures and languages, the explorers needed a link - men who could speak to and understand the white man but who also knew the Indian mind and character. The story of these indispensable mediators (almost all or part Indian blood) and their adventures and exploits is the subject of Breeds and Half-Breeds.

The title: Through the Grand Canyon with America's Famous Boatman, Norman Nevills.

This edition was reillustrated and again reset to follow the format and layout of the then current Utah Historical Quarterly. It was also given a new cover. Saunders 57.

In 1855 the Mormons established a mission at the foot of famous Lemhi Pass near Salmon River, where the Lewis and Clark Corps of Discovery first crossed the Continental Divide and Sacagawea was reunited with her brother. Fort Limhi was, at first, part of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints' outreach to the Indians throughout the West. But the mission soon assumed a critical role in Brigham Young's plans for the Saints as they faced the imminent confrontation with the U.S. government which came to be known as the Utah War.

Mariposa that features an anchor on the cover. The S.S. Mariposa was one of the four luxury liners in Matson's 'White Fleet', which were designed by William Francis Gibbs and also included SS Malolo, SS Matsonia and SS Lurline. Mariposa was identical to Matsonia and very similar to Lurline.

Short illustrated work that contains a brief biographical sketch of the legendary mountain man and pathfinder which is followed by a list of all the monuments of Smith. Each listing includes the location, accessibility, type of construction, the wording on the monument, and illustration of the monument.

Logan: Utah State University Press, 1999. 448pp. Octavo [23 cm] Illustrated wrappers. Near fine. Scoundrel's Tale is the story of Mormonism, Manifest Destiny and the conquest of California, Western exploration and settlement, the gold rush, vigilantism, and the Gilded Age. It is an amazing tale of the West, told in the words of Brannan and his contemporaries, brilliantly illuminated by the hand of Will Bagley.

[Omaha, NE]: [Union Pacific Rail Road], 1935. Real photo postcard [14 cm x 9 cm] Back has a Union Pacific shield and 'Utah Parks Company' vertically, dividing the back. Image is sharp. Image of the Queen Victoria formation in Bryce from the Queens Garden Trail. This RPPC was produced to promote trips from the Utah Parks Company, which was a subsidiary of U.P., that ran guided loop tours of the parks and monuments of southern Utah and northern Arizona.

St. Paul, MN: Great Northern Railway, 1940. Color print [30.5 cm x 23 cm] in nice, bright condition. Near fine. Winhold Reiss (1886-1953) was a painter, illustrator, and interior designer who emigrated from Germany to the United States in 1913, where he taught art for a time at the Art Students' League. In 1919 he traveled to Montana to paint portraits of members of the Blackfeet nation. Reiss depicted his subjects as they were, without the romanticization that many of his fellow artists at the time were using to depict Native Americans. During the summers from 1927 to 1948, Reiss spent in Glacier National Park studying and drawing members of the Blackfeet, these trips were sponsored by the Great Northern Railway, who acquired the majority of these works, and used them in promotional material.

Gentle overall wear. Image of the Temple Block from the southeast by this Salt Lake City photographer whose images are uncommon.
