At the beginning of the twentieth century, W.C.E. Newbolt and Darwell Stone saw a surplus of complex academic theology coming out of universities and cathedrals, but a lack of channels that could get this learning into the hands of the devout laypeople who could put it into practice. They organized the Oxford Library of Practical Theology and this volume is but one of a total of twenty-two in the series. The goal was to convert complex early-twentieth-century academic theology into digestible volumes, drawing on the brightest minds of the early twentieth-century Anglican church.

Charles Bridges (1794-1869) was a prominent member of the evangelical party in the Anglican church, and author of many popular devotional and theological treatises including this one. A lovely fore-edge painting with a view of the Thames River with St. Paul's Cathedral in the background.

Binding: Bound in grained dark blue paneled morocco, with both boards embellished with heavy gold-leaf work and a central lozenge tooled in blind. Hubbed spine with six elaborately gilt-tooled compartments and the words "Bridges on Psalm CXIX" lettered in gilt. All edges gilt.
Condition: Internally crisp, clean, and bright. Slightly splayed, with joints lightly rubbed and gilt to spine lightly faded. Gilt to edges and forge-edge painting remain clear and vibrant.

DESCRIPTION
8vo (8" x 5"). Text in single column Roman font, divided into 23 lectures on the topic of the Sermon on the Mount. Brewster's commentary combines historical context with practical application, guiding readers towards a deeper understanding of Christian principles and a more authentic spiritual life. Brewster writes "for the information of ordinary readers, and for the improvement of practical Christians" (foreword). A vanishing fore-edge painting of a naval scene at Plymouth Sound: a small port with boats in the background and people in the foreground.

Facsimile of the 1717 historic edition featuring over 100 masterful engravings by John Sturt. His work was done by hand on silver plates to allow for extreme detail. The engravings took Sturt three years to complete and now stand apart as his masterpiece.

Condition
Pages generally crisp, clean, and bright. Three leaves towards the middle strengthened without loss. Very lightly rubbed, mostly to corners. A nice prayer book in a beautiful binding.

This scarce Print Bible is also called the Schutbijbel because of the name of the engraver of the prints, Pieter Hendrik Schut (1619-1662). Schut also added his own designs to the Merian prints. Each title print is in Latin, Dutch, German, English, and French. The Sacred Histories of the Old and New Testament, represented by very artificial figures. Preface in four languages. There is also a caption in rhyme in these five languages under each engraving. Complete copy with 277 engravings by Pieter Schut after the prints of Mattheus Merian.

Description: Oxford: Oxford University Press, 1843. 32mo (4.75 x 3 x 1.25 in). A beautiful little prayer book with all edges gilt featuring a triple fore-edge painting. The paintings include the words "read" to the top edge, "digest" to the bottom edge, and "mark and learn" to the fore-edge. The covers feature an embossed cross, the spine with four raised blind-ruled bands and blind-tooling to compartments with the word "prayer" lettered in gilt. A fully functioning clasp with the monogram "IHS". The interior boasts marbled endpapers and inner dentelles. The text is printed in both red and black and the Book of Common Prayer is supplemented by the Psalms of David.
Condition: Covers very slightly rubbed. Pages are crisp and clean. The word "learn" is more faded. Lacks front marbled endpaper, else a fine copy of a unique little prayer book.

The Illuminated Bible Containing the Old and New Testaments… embellished with sixteen hundred historical engravings…
New York: Harper and Brothers, 1846. Folio (13" x 10.25" x 3.5"). A well-preserved famous 1846 Harper Illuminated Bible. Beautiful gilt decorated front and back cover with over 1600 engravings throughout. Professionally re-backed and restored. Dated 1846 with, at foot of title, "entered ... in the year 1843 by Harper and Brothers". Frontispiece and illuminated title to each Testament. Table, Index and Concordance at the end. With Apocrypha, as issued.
The work was originally announced in 1843 and was issued in 54 numbers of 25ct each. J.A. Adams, the engraver, is credited with having taken the first electrotype in America from a woodcut. Many illustrations in this Bible are done this way. Artists were engaged for more than six years in the preparation of the designs and engravings included in this Bible, at a cost of over $20,000 - a small fortune in those days.

Text block dyed in red with text containing wide margins. A few ex-library stamps to the text of both commentaries. Minor marks, light blemishes or reading wear. A lovely, solid copy of a scarce and valuable book.
Note
Galatians is well known as Luther's favorite book: the subject of his lectures in 1519 and again in 1523. Luther has stated: The Epistle to the Galatians is my epistle. To it I am as it were in wedlock… It is my Katherine [i.e. Luther s wife]. The significance of this commentary upon Protestantism is difficult to overstate. Over and above all of Luther s writings it represents the crux of justification by faith alone in the strongest and clearest sense.

The Bible and Holy Scriptures conteyned in the Olde and Newe Testament. translated according to the ebrue and Greke, and conferred With the best translations in diuers languages. A scarce title page of the second edition, first folio 1562 Geneva Bible. This leaf has been matted and custom framed with a plaque mounted below the leaf. Title page on verso with The Name and Order of All The Bookes… on recto. The recto is not visible since the leaf is framed.
This inviting title page of the groundbreaking Geneva Bible is the same type as issued in the 1560 First Edition quarto and unique to these two editions. Features a woodcut of a candlestick and citation from Matthew 5:15, "No man lighteth a candell, for to put it under a bushell, but upon the candlestick."
