This is the history of the style of karate taught by of one of Okinawa's greatest living karate masters, Grandmaster Fusei Kise. The development of Suidi (Shuri-te) and Shorin-ryu are examined within the context of Ryukyuan history, and the great masters such as Kusanku, Toudi Sakugawa and Bushi Matsumura are seen in the political, cultural and economic background of their time. The history of Shorin-Ryu Matsumura in the 20th century is presented in two interviews with Master Hohan Soken that were not previously available in English. This history is brought up to the present day through interviews with Grandmaster Kise and his students throughout the world. It is a large format paperback, 8 ½ x 11 inches, 176 pages, limited to 1500 copies. There are over 100 photographs. First published in Okinawa in 2005, the English language edition was published in 2008.

Bound in contemporary paper boards, pages untrimmed, light foxing and soiling throughout; [8], 189 pages. Fischer (1771-1829) was a minor German critic and travel writer. In this work he presents 111 very short fables whose morals he applies directly to the contemporary European political situation. The vast majority of the fables have animal actors. A nice unsophisticated copy of an uncommon title of marginal importance. OCLC locates fewer than 15, none in the US.

Silver gelatin print mounted on card, 4.75 x 7.25 inches, edges chipped as visible in scan.Manufactured in Marion, Ohio, Marion shovels were a world-wide fixture in mining and excavation from the 1880s through the 1980s. This photo of a Marion Model 61 in Russia may be during the construction of the mammoth iron mining and steel refining city of Magnitogorsk in the 1930s. Marion shovels there inspired poet and Magnitogorsk worker Boris Ruchyov to write the "Ballad of Excavator Marion." Inscription on reverse suggests it may have been published in a magazine.

The last major outbreak of bubonic plague in Western Europe killed 50,000 in Marseille and 50,000 in the adjacent region from 1720-1722. This account by Marseille physician Jean-Baptiste Bertrand (1670-1752) is the most detailed eyewitness account to survive. He was honored by the authorities for his tireless work through inclusion on the official plague monument erected in 1802.
This first edition was published anonymously under the fictitious imprint "à Cologne, chez Pierre Marteau," suggesting that Bertrand was concerned about potential censorship. Half-tone photos throughout.A very evocative guide book to "Jewish excursions" in Frankfurt and Hessen, dedicated to "My wife, Bertha Lilienthal, née Fuchs. My hiking companion on rocky roads." The preface is dated almost exactly a year before Kristallnacht. The author was the chief cantor at the main synagogue in Wiesbaden. He and his wife fled to Amsterdam in June 1939. He was transported to Theresienstadt in 1943 and murdered in October 1944. His wife's exact fate is unknown.

The Russo-Japanese War: Taken by the Photography Department of the Imperial Headquarter, Numbers 1-14; published in Tokyo, 1904-05, by K. Ogawa. 14 large format (10 x 14 inch) pamphlets recently bound together in hardcover. Original wraps bound in, occasional foxing throughout, good condition overall. 224 full page half-tone photographs taken at the front by Ogawa Kazumasa (1860-1929). Ogawa pioneered photomechanical reproduction in Japan, both collotypes and halftones, and was possibly Japan's most prolific and commercially successful photographer in the early twentieth century. These are 14 of the 23 parts that Ogawa published on the Japanese Army in the war, dating from October 1904 through June 1905.

Cambridge: Cambridge University Press. Eight quarto volumes, top edges gilt. Clean ex-seminary library copies in original bindings. Spines uniformly sunned, volume 2 has inner hinges reinforced with black tape, otherwise very good condition. Most sheets are light card measuring 6 x 9 inches, but about 15% are on plain paper measuring 6 x 8. A few are chipped at the edges, but no images are affected.Photographic record of a cruise in December 1898 to inspect the facilities of the Société Général des Sucreries et de la Raffinage d'Egypt, the major force in Egypt's substantial sugar industry. Though relatively small in format, these photos are detailed and evocative. Lots of great views of the Nile, Pharaonic monuments, growing and processing cane, with one picture of imprisoned Sudanese Mahdists working in a chain gang.

Thirty-one engravings, all clipped from issues of Памятная книжка (Pamaiatnaia knizhka), an annual almanac of military, naval, imperial court and civil officials, published in Saint Petersburg by Военной Типографий (The Military Press). Each annual contained six to ten plates, mostly of places in the empire outside of Russia proper, reflecting contemporary Russian expansionism. During the period of this album, all the engravings in the almanacs were executed by English engravers whose work appears in English view books. All were based on paintings by prominent "Russian artists".
