Rare French edition printed in Uppsala of the abridgement of the Essay on Human Understanding by John Wynne, the format in which Locke's thought was most effectively popularized at English universities and in Europe. "In the last decade of the seventeenth century, English culture held a frustrated fascination for the continental Republic of Letters. Frustrated, because few Europeans could approach English ideas in the English language. Gabriel Bonno1 has shown how Locke's continental readers were dependent initially upon reviews in French-language journals – Basnage de Beauval's Histoire des ouvrages des savans, Bernard's Nouvelles de la r�publique des lettres, and (particularly) Le Clerc's Biblioth�que universelle and its successors. Interested parties such as Limborch and Leibniz did not really come to grips with the Essay until it had been translated into French. Bologna?, 1746. Very rare illustrated edition (second; first c. 1685) of this poem on the siege of Vienna, along with Dialogues between Men and Women on daily life (La Banzuola). The two compositions form the most extensive and most philologically genuine literary compositions in Bolognese dialect.

Paris, 1667. No Binding. Near Fine. 12 ½ x 17 inches. Original outline color; excellent. Earliest map of Martinique listed in Phillips, featuring attractive original color and an elegant cartouche. This map depicts the situation on the island before 1660, when it was still largely inhabited by natives, and only about half of it had been claimed by colonists for sugar cane farming. The map goes so far as to mark with a printed line the partition dividing the "demeure des François" and the "demeure des savages." However, by 1660, the entirety of the native population was either dead, expelled, or in slavery, and Martinique was a full-fledged, sugar cane-farming, European colony. Phillips, Maps, P. 389.

Very minor handsoiling, a few leaves trimmed close at upper margin resulting in partial loss of printed folio numbers, manuscript foliation, contemporary annotations to final page. Generally very good. Very rare Spanish legal document concerning tithes certified between the Archbishop of Granada, Alonso Bernardo de los Rios y Guzman (served 1677-92), and the Prior of the Carthusian monastery of Granada. While the text offers a fascinating and surprisingly detailed account of this ecclesiastical suit and is especially rich in prosopographical material, the work is primarily of importance for its early copperplate engraving of the Virgin of Atocha depicted as the miraculous patroness of Madrid. Nuremberg, 1767. No Binding. Very Good. 6 ¾ x 12 ½ inches. Fine hand color; bottom and top margins extended with very slight loss, very good condition. One of the few obtainable maps of St. Thomas published prior to 1800. The attractively colored map names many plantations, many of the island's bays as well as the smaller islands surrounding Saint Thomas including Lille Saba. The map appeared in Oldendorp's "History of the Evangelical Brethren on the Caribbean Islands of St. Thomas, St. Croix and St. John," the earliest history of the Virgin Islands.

Very rare first edition, and likely a pre-journal 'off-print,' of this report on the wines presented and judged at the Vienna World's Fair of 1873, with special focus on the wines of Spain, written by the chief of the Spanish Agricultural Commission.Santos' work begins with a description of recent advances in soil science and chemistry, including the work of Ramon Torres Muñoz de Luna, a chemistry professor at the University of Madrid, and especially Justus von Liebig, the recently-dead German chemist who revealed the role of nitrogen in plant science. One of the few obtainable maps of St. Croix published prior to 1800. The attractively colored map shows the island divided into its administrative quarters. Sugar mills, plantations, and the towns of Christiansted and Frederiksted are shown. The map appeared in Oldendorp's "History of the Evangelical Brethren on the Caribbean Islands of St. Thomas, St. Croix and St. John," the earliest history of the Virgin Islands.

Generally fresh and excellent.A full-sheet Oxford Almanack for the year 1800 with lists of the kings of England starting from William the Conqueror and of the officers of the university. It is illustrated with an etching designed by Edward Dayes (1763-1804) and executed by James Basire (1730-1802). The text was engraved by James Cole (active from 1764-80).
The Oxford sheet almanacks were issued yearly from 1676 until 1946. To quote Petter, "The value of a yearly series of illustrations such as the almanacks provide is that in them a single unbroken thread reveals the trends of development and illustrates with precision the history of art" [Petter, The Oxford Almanack, 1674-1946, p. 14].

Title toned and a bit soiled with two small ink-spots, not affecting text, toning in the margins of some leaves; nevertheless generally good, with some leaves uncut and with original deckle edges. Very rare first and sole edition of the first treatise published by the pioneering French mineralogist Jean-Baptiste Romé de L'Isle (1736-1780), and his sole work on marine biology, concerning the "movement, generation and nature" of the freshwater polyp. In the present work Romé hypothesizes, drawing on observations by the naturalist "M. Bazin," that polyps are a kind of living hive built of thousands of tiny separate units, 'petits grains,' that nonetheless work harmoniously to feed, move, and regenerate the entire body. Second edition, appearing the same year as the first, of this eye-witness account of missionary work in the American south. In 1793, Stephen Theodore Badin, a native of Orleans, became the first priest ordained in the United States by the Catholic church. A short while later he was appointed a missionary to Kentucky, with the center of work at Bardstown. Inexperienced and ignorant of frontier language and customs, Badin devoted all his efforts to the great challenge at hand. Although he was poor and often suffered for want of bare necessities, he became a church builder, loved and admired by Protestants and Catholics alike.
In 1819 Badin returned to his native land determined to raise money for his missionary projects. This small book, by an able priest, graphically describes the work of early Catholic missionaries in central Kentucky between 1793 and 1819 (Clark, 135).

Fore-edge of one leaf shaved, with loss of 1-2 letters per line; a few dark spots on one page, without loss; mild dampstains. Overall good. First edition, second state, of this rare work on growing, curing, packaging and selling tobacco, written for the benefit of farmers in the Papal States who had two years earlier been given permission to cultivate it. Much of the information is based on methods of tobacco cultivation in Maryland and Virginia, although French and Persian methods are cited as well. Gavelli also details the process of manufacturing snuff in Italy, the prices of tobacco under the late monopoly, and the current rates for various types of tobacco in Amsterdam. This study by Dr. Verhaeghe of Ostend describes a rhinoplasty operation carried out in July of 1845 or 1846 by the renowned Berlin physician Johann Friederich Dieffenbach (1792-1847), who was then in residence at Ostend. Dieffenbach, whose maxillofacial and rhinoplastic surgery techniques are considered to be the foundation of modern reconstructive surgery, used a segment of skin from the patient's forehead to reshape his nose. First edition of this classic of American hagiography, the life of the most celebrated and prolific New England pastor, Cotton Mather, by his son Samuel. The biography of a "star" clergyman soon after his death was a well-established genre in colonial America and found a wide audience for the spiritual guidance his life would allegedly furnish. As often as not, this task was performed by the pastor's son, not infrequently his successor.
