Ottawa, Illinois. Good with no dust jacket. 1858. Ephemera. On offer is a letter from the City Bank of Eames, Allen & Co of Ottawa, Illinois, demanding payment of an outstanding note. This was equivalent to about 12 weeks wages for an ordinary worker in America at that time. The note reads: Dear SirI would call your attention to your note due May 21/54 in which there is a balance of $125 --. We wish to get in all of these back matters. I trust you will give it your earliest attention. For a historian, this is a sample of part of the on-going growth and development of the American credit system that ultimately laid the foundation for one of the greatest economies in history. This document measures 10.75 inches by 8.5 inches. It is a single sheet bearing the letterhead of a bank and a stamp of the… Leer más

Descripción:
New England, United States. Good with no dust jacket. 1842. Ephemera. On offer is an excellent example of a receipt from mid-19th century New England. Dated June 17, 1842, it records a payment of $2.94 received by Hiram Roberts from the firm of Nicholson & Ormsbee. The receipt was drawn up to record payment for work Roberts did for two persons, presumably at the behest of Nicholson & Ormsbee. Hiram Roberts lived in Brandon VT from 1814 until his death in 1885. Records list him as a painter. Nicholson & Ormsbee was a local law firm. The partners were David E. Nicholson who later became a judge and E. J. Ormsbee. For a local historian or a collector of 19th century financial documents, this is an excellent example of the type of routine business carried out daily in 19th century America. This small document measures 3.5 inches by 8.0 inches. Handwritten on cream-coloured paper, it is in very good condition. The handwriting is quite legible. There is a slight discolouration on the left edge.… Leer más

Edinburgh Scotland. Good with no dust jacket. 1965. Ephemera. On offer is an interesting letter that connects directly to a major battle in the War of 1812 between theBritish colony of Canada and the United States. This document is a letter from the Scottish United Services Museum in Edinburgh (now The National War Museum) to a resident in Queenston, Ontario in Canada. This letter refers to the last major battle in the War of 1812: the Siege of Fort Erie. The battle was one of the last engagements of the War of 1812, between British and American forces. It took place during the Niagara campaign, and the Americans successfully defended Fort Erie (now the city of Fort Erie, Ontario) against a British/Canadian army. During the siege, the British suffered high casualties in a failed storming attempt. This letter refers directly to a disastrous event that occurred in the storming attempt. One unit, the 103rd Regiment of Foot, stormed a blockhouse and for a time occupied it. Incoming American… Leer más

Descripción:
Ohio. Good with no dust jacket. 1883. Ephemera. On offer is a manuscript letter written in 1883 by a rural American man named John Wells. Wells was born in 1818 and lived in the village of Ada, Ohio with his wife, until his passing in 1892 at the age of 73. Wells writes this letter to a Mrs. Boley. In it, he asks her to pay an outstanding sum of $2.00 to the local postmaster. He makes the request stating that he had been ill all winter and not able to leave his home. In its brevity, it points to the difficulties that people faced in their lives in early rural America and the extent to which they needed to rely on family and friends to help manage difficult times. Measuring 8.0 inches by 5.0 inches, it is a single, one-sided sheet. The letter is in good condition with 2 deep fold marks and a slight amount of discolouration along the edges. The handwriting is quite legible. ; Manuscripts; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 1 pages; Signed by Author .

Paris, France. Good with no dust jacket. 1928. Ephemera. On offer is an excellent example of a Postal/Telegraph notice used by the French government in the years following WWI. The document is a notice issued to a M. Fricot that either a letter or telegraph has been received for him at the post office. The form was issued by the Post Office in Paris on April 13th, 1928. For collectors of postal memorabilia, this is a fine example of the type of notices used in France in the early part of the 20th century. The document is generally 9.0 inches by 5.0 inches. However, it was designed to be folded and has a flap enclosure to seal it. The document is in fairly good condition with a small part missing in the lower left corner; 9"x5" ; 1 pages .

Amboise, France. Good with no dust jacket. 1881. Ephemera. On offer is a lovely Thank You card dating from late 19th century France. The note is dated in Amboise France, a small community in the centre of Frances Loire Valley. The town is famous for the Chateau d'Amboise, the grand 15th-century residence of King Charles VIII and site of Leonardo da Vinci's tomb. The recipient of this lovely card is not identified and the authors name cannot be made out. The sentiments expressed though, are quite clear. Poor with no dust jacket. 1893. Manuscript. On offer is a testament to true love on Valentine’s Day in the late 19th century. This 14 line sonnet was handwritten by an unknown transcriptionist, presumably for his Valentine. He has written out British poet Thomas Hood’s (1799-1845) Sonnet for the 14th of February, in a lovely cursive hand. He has dated the poem, February 14, 1893. Our transcriptionist has made some changes to personalize the poem, such as changing the phrase “And to his mistress dear his hopes convey” to “And to his dearest one his hopes convey” (Line 5). The poem is credited to “Tom Hood (modified) ” and signed with the initials FHI. This poem’s biggest flaw is one of its greatest assets. It is clear from the way the piece of paper has ripped at all of its fold lines, that the recipient of this poem kept it near and dear for a great many years. The paper on which the poem is written is in very poor condition. It has been taped… Leer más

Victor, New York, Rochester. Good with no dust jacket. 1885. Manuscript. On offer is a letter from a successful 19th century business owner to his father, Albert, concerning several business matters that cannot wait. The letter was handwritten on September 22, 1885 by Eugene S. Berry (1854-1922) of Rochester, New York, to his father, Albert. Eugene owns and operates E. S. Berry Victor Roller Mills, a wholesaler of flour and feed operated in Victor, Ontario County, New York. Context clues from within the letter suggest that Albert plays a high-level role in the business and that Eugene seeks his approval. This single-page letter is handwritten on E. S Berry letterhead. In it, Eugene informs his father of challenges with getting a business contract from Mr. Parmele, who seems to be an employee of his firm. Mr. Parmele is eager to have Eugene sign said contract imminently, but Eugene will require additional time with it before signing. Eugene expresses concern that the company insurance… Leer más

Paris, France. Good with no dust jacket. 1960. Ephemera. On offer is a correspondence October, 1960 between two prominent Parisian lawyers. The letter bears the letterhead of Pierre Marcilhacy, a noted lawyer and politician in France. It was addressed to Yves-Frederic Jaffre, an equally-noted lawyer and author. Context suggests that the case they are involved with is a marital dispute with each lawyer representing one of the parties. In the letter, Marcilhacy addresses Jaffre as “Mon cher ami” (my dear friend). He goes on to discuss his fees and his intention to file an appeal according to Jaffre’s instructions. Finally, he explains that he must wait for the agreement of Madam Reyt prior to filing his appeal. Marcilhacy was born in 1910. He practised law and also served in the French government. During WWII, he fought with the French Resistance. He became a Senator and, in 1965, he ran against Charles de Gaulle in the presidential elections. He lost and threw his support… Leer más

Factoryville, Pennsylvania. Very Good with no dust jacket. 1940. Manuscript. On offer is a sweet letter written to Mrs. Daisy (Ball) Bailey (1897-1964) of Dalton, Pennsylvania from her friend Flora who lives in nearby Factoryville, PA. The letter was written on May 12, 1940 and addressed to Daisy at home in Dalton, although at the time of writing, Daisy was hospitalized, having undergone surgery. The letter is four pages (one single page folded in half with writing on four sides). Throughout the entire letter, Flora provides Daisy with multiple reasons (possibly excuses) as to why she was unable to come to the hospital to visit her. Floras reasons include: she was packing, she was busy serving her husbands colleagues meals, Daisys husband never told her the visiting hours at the hospital, and that she got lost on the way to the hospital. She then sends Daisy endless good wishes, including a wish that Daisy would come and stay with her soon. While it was written over 80 years ago, it will… Leer más

France. Good with no dust jacket. 1822. Ephemera. On offer is an interesting receipt for taxes received by the city of Bourges, France, 155 miles south of Paris, in the early years following the Napoleonic Wars. It details a tax payment received by the city from the son of Monsieur Gibieuf. The payment is for “de cinquirute un franc”. The receipt is signed by Le Percepter [The Collector], a Monsieur Deschaud. The average labourer earned much less than 1 franc per day so this gives a sense of how intent the authorities were to collect even the smallest amount of money from the citizenry. Although only a small example of the bureaucratic machinery of government, this receipt is also a symbol. It was the heavy and deeply unfair taxation system in France that directly contributed to the French Revolution and the destruction of the French nobility and position of the Roman Catholic church. For a historian, it is a tangible hint of the tax burdens that still weighed on the average… Leer más

United States Naval Reserve Atlanta, Georgia. Good with no dust jacket. 1957. Ephemera. On offer is a US Navy internal document regarding an officer's transfer and posting. The document, dated in 1957, concerns a Lieutenant (JG) Charles M. Davis . Davis served in the United States Naval Reserve. The letter is written by the Commandant of the US Navy's Sixth District to the Commanding Officer of the US Navy Reserve unit based in Atlanta GA. It concerns the request for a billet or assignment. The letter clearly outlines how the Commanding Officer's request is deficient in a number of ways. It is a classic example of the bureaucratic insistence on absolute correctness on forms and filings. Both of these documents contain the names of other US Navy officers. Our informal research was not able to find additional biographical information on Cdr Armstrong. For a genealogist, these records offer opportunities to fill in the gaps particular biographies. For a historian, especially a naval… Leer más
