New York: Harper & Brothers, 1837. . 14 out of 16 volumes (lacks 13 and 16) of the collected works of Mrs Sherwood, dark green-brown cloth with decorated spines (one detached, one missing) some wear and tear to extremities. Mrs Mary Martha Sherwood (1775-1851) was an influential English writer of fiction who spent 11 years in India with her husband, an officer in the British army. She is best known for the Anglo-Indian story, Little Henry and His Bearer, which was widely used in Britain, India, and other places, including in missionary educational contexts. Many of her books promoted personal evangelical Christianity, some opposing Roman Catholicism and other religions, and a number, like "Little Henry", are set in India. London: Edward Griffin for Henry Fetherstone, 1617. . This 1617 combined edition in a single volume has two sequences of pages running to page 728 and page 312. This copy lacks several title pages both of the book as a whole and of individual treatises, and also lacks 10 pages of text scattered across three locations. The front board and first page of epistle dedicatory are detached from the rest of the book; this board has a mended corner. The paper is in remarkably good condition throughout apart from a few tears, especially considering that the book is over 400 years old - if only some of our modern books were printed on paper as durable as this! Joseph Hall, Bishop of Norwich, was a Calvinistic Anglican, and an English representative at the Synod of Dordt. He held some evangelical and puritan principles but was not part of the Puritan movement. London: Tho. Roycroft for James Allestry, 1669. . [4] + 1-276, [4], 269-293, [7], 295-329 + [3] pages. Boards detached and a bit battered, internal binding good, a little foxing or similar staining to later pages. Richard Allestree (1619-1681) was a Royalist clergyman and Professor of Divinity, and is suspected to have been the author of part or all of "The Whole Duty of Man". Scarce.. Leather. Average.

London: T N for Henry Mortlock, 1681. . [2] + xciv + [8] + [1-88], [91-449] + [1] pages; gap between 88 and 91 is a mere misnumbering rather than missing text. Rebacked. Ex Gloucestershire County Library (stamps to back of title page). Title page has some very old handwriting, perhaps a past owner's name. Against nonconformists. Edward Stillingfleet (1635-1699) an Arminian "latitudinarian" and a popular preacher, was later Bishop of Worcester.. Leather. Good.

London: Jonathan Robinson, [John Everingham, and] John Wyat, 1694. . 431 pages. Spine and extremities worn, lacks approx. 16 pages of preliminaries (title page, dedication, preface, errata, list of texts explained) but the main text is complete. This is almost certainly the first (1694) edition of Volume 2, the whole collection of 3 volumes being issued 1695, and a second edition in 1696. Rare and not currently available in printed form (e.g. print on demand). John Edwards (1637-1716) was a Calvinist preacher who remained in the Church of England at the time of the Act of Uniformity, though he did have to leave St John's, Bury St Edmunds a few years later before accepting another post as a vicar in Colchester.. London: Thomas Basset, 1673. . [iv] + 268 pages. Pages 63-64 are in the wrong place. Bound in olive leather spine and corners with red spine label and marbled boards (probably 20th century); top edges of pages trimmed a bit tightly. Title page has an old pen annotation stating that this Sir Edwin Sandys was the 2nd Son of Edwin Archbishop of York and Mr Hooker's Pupil, and the father of Colonel Edwin Sandys slain 1642. Scarce. . Farnham: Ashgate Publishing Ltd, 2010. . xvi + 304 pages, pagination following that in the periodicals and books from which the 13 papers have been reprinted.. Cloth. Very Good.

Edinburgh: Ogle & Aikman . 218 + [2] pages, front internal hinge mended with white paper, previous owner's name and address to flyleaf, some water staining to pages, page 18 faint. Undated (lacks title page) but has long esses. There is a record of a "New Edition" printed by Ogle & Aikman in 1807 but the seller wonders whether this would be a little late for long esses. Scarce except in generic print-on-demand editions. The author was a domestic servant who lived around the end of the 17th and beginning of the 18th centuries and was of a covenanter persuausion though a member of the Church of Scotland.. Cloth. Average.

London: Church Missionary Society/L B Seeley and Sons, 1830. . xxiii + 392 pages, 22 sermons on Revelation (12 on 7 churches, 2 on Church Triumphant, 1 on the Millennium) and 7 sermons on Psalm 130. Scarce. Rebound in plain cloth with a handwritten label to spine. Edges foxed, a little old staining here and there.. Cloth. Average Plus.

Philadelphia: Peter Walker, 1859. . iv + 785 pages. Leather spine crumbled away, boards a bit warped; internally in fairly good order but in need of rebinding.. Half-Leather. Poor.

Glasgow: W R M'Phun & Son . iv + 103 + 1220 pages, covers have wear and tear and are somewhat damp-stained; edges etc grubby. Scarce, no other copies found for sale online at the time of cataloguing. Wylie says this is a new edition of an earlier Bible Dictionary compiled by one of the contributors to Dr Kitto's Bible Encylopaedia; York Minster's library catalogue identifies this as The Bible Dictionary issued by Cassell, Petter and Galpin in 1863-1866. For this edition Wylie added 40-50 articles "generally on topics which are receiving a large share of attention from the theologians of the day", and also a 103 page preliminary essay on theology. Strangely for a publication from Scotland edited by a conservative anti-Roman Catholic minister of the Free Church of Scotland, a few of the plates claim to portray the Lord Jesus. The British Museum catalogue of 1883 gives a date of "[1870]" for this item.. Half-Leather. Average Minus.

London/Gloucester: Hamilton Adams & Co/Davies & Son, 1884. . viii + 266 pages, a further volume of Family Devotion in addition to the 2 volume set already issued on the Psalms. 64 expositions/exhortations to read to the family, each based around a vese from Ephesians 1 to 3. Henry Law (1797-1884), author of the Christ Is All series on Genesis to Deuteronomy, died in the following month after this was issued. Scarce except in generic print-on-demand editions. Discolouration to spine with a little wear and tear at top and bottom, edges foxed, gift inscription and another past owner's name to flyleaf.. First Edition?. Cloth. Average Plus.

Originally issued in Dutch as meditations in De Gereformeerde Kerkbode in Zuid-Afrika in 1866 and as a book, Zijt Mij Genadig, in 1868, and here translated into English by James Philip Lilley, Free Church minister of Arbroath.. Heavy foxing to frontispiece of Vol 9; a little foxing in other volumes; most do not have a frontispiece present. Volumes 1 to 5 contain Cowper's life and his letters up to August 1786 (we lack Vol 6 & 7 of letters 1786-1799). Volumes 8 to 10 contain poetry (we lack Vols 11-14 - Cowper's translation of Homer's Iliad and Odyssey, and Vol 15 which contains further letters and a handful of papers). Volumes 3 and 8 have title page signed Saml Wilberforce. William Wilberforce's son was later bishop of Oxford and of Winchester. . Cloth. Good.

Volumes 1-5 of this 8 volume set are "Life and Letters" while Volumes 6-8 are "Poems". Some volumes have one or two stamps of "Fulneck Girls School", part of a Moravian settlement in Pudsey on the edge of Leeds.. Cloth. Good.
