Folding maps in volume I [2], 3, 5, 11, 13, 14, 19, 23. 24 First map in volume 1 has a closed tear with no paper loss, same with the maps in volume 11 and 23. New Haven, CT: Manuscript Notes, 1828. Series of handwritten notes by an unknown student of a Materia Medica course taught at Yale University by Professor Eli Ives (1779-1861). Ives was one of the originators of the Yale School of Medicine, one of the first five professors, and chaired the Materia and Medica and Botany until 1829. The notes consist of about 400 pages (about 200 written on both sides) on six long thin stitched pads about 8 inches tall and 3.25 inches wide, mostly from 1828-29 but one part dated 1824. Generally good condition with just a few partial leaves either separated from or at the top of the pads. The notes describe properties and uses of mainly botanicals and some other substances (ether, cobwebs, skunk oil, petroleum etc.), and the first section alone includes notes on more than forty medicines. We purchased it with a piece of white fabric tape around the grouping, fastened with a straight pin as pictured.. First Edition. Soft Cover. Fair. 12mo - over 6¾" -… Leer más

Descripción:
Hartford, CT: N.P., 1877. First edition, 1877. In a move unthought of for women of their time, the author and her sister Abby Hadassah Smith sued the town of Glastonbury, Connecticut when it attempted to levy a tax directed at single and sidowed women. The sisters argued that because they could not vote, this represented taxation without representation. The courts did not decide in their favor and the town auctioned off their cows to pay the debt. Softcover, 94 pages, frontis woodcut of Abby and the cows. Fair to good with covers chipped with some staining and a crease to the front cover, rear cover detached, binding sound, some old dampstains to few outer margins, a few pages with darkened top margins, pages otherwise clean and unmarked. The author Julia Evelina Smith is best known for publishing the first translation of the Bible by a woman, in 1876, and an advertisement for this Bible is printed inside the front cover. . First Edition. Soft Cover. Fair. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.

London: Leonard & Virginia Woolf at the Hogarth Press, 1932. First edition, 1932. Great association copy with a handwritten inscription by Lady Ottoline Morrell to her half-brother, William Arthur, Sixth Duke of Portland, with his armorial bookplate inside the front cover. Lady Ottoline was a great patron of literature and frequently hosted the Bloomsbury group, including Virginia Woolf, and developed a stormy relationship with her. In her memoirs, Lady Ottoline said: "She seemed to feel certain of her own eminence. It is true, but it is rather crushing, for I feel she is very contemptuous of other people. When I stretched out a hand to feel another woman, I found only a very lovely, clear intellect." Green cloth with gilt spine lettering, no dustjacket. Some modest shelfwear, good hinges, sound text block, clean pages. The inscription on the front free endpaper reads: "From Ottoline to my loved Brother" dated Dec 28 1932 (looks like 1922 but that is before the book was… Leer más

Descripción:
New York: John Low (later, E. Low), 1805. First American edition. Attractive early American encyclopedia, begun in 1805 by John Low and completed after his death by E. Low, with volumes dated 1805 through 1811. The title page states that the set was to have contained 170 plates, but it is unlikely that that number of plates was included in any extant copy (the Library of Congress has a set of the plates for this encylopedia that numbers 149, but does not have the text). This copy contains 122 plates, including 34 maps, ten of which are folding, with a folding plate. There is inconsistent pagination and two pages of volume VI which are not present and were probably never bound in. Full original polished calf with black spine labels and gilt volume numbers. Vol. I: 666p. + 27 plates incl. 6 maps (2 folding) and 2 celestial maps. Vol. II: 646p. + 21 plates incl. 5 maps (2 folding). Vol. III: 654p. + 29 plates incl. 4 maps (2 folding).
