1821. Davy, Humphry (1778-1829). Some observations and experiments on the papyri found in the ruins of Herculaneum. Extract from Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society (1821): 191-208; 8 engraved plates. 266 x 213 mm. Disbound. First leaf partly detached, some toning and offsetting but very good. Blind-embossed library stamps on plates, library stamps on plate versos. First Edition, journal issue. In 1819 Davy was commissioned by George IV to work on unrolling the Herculaneum papyri. Using the most advanced scientific means available at the time, Davy analyzed the chemistry and physical nature of the papyri and applied chlorine and other chemicals in an effort to separate the charred rolls' fragile layers. His methods met with only limited success but he was able to partially unroll 23 rolls, a few fragments of which are depicted in the plates illustrating the present paper. .

S. government, was established in June 1861 for the purpose of coordinating the volunteer efforts of women who wanted to contribute to the war effort of the Union states during the American Civil War. The USSC provided care for sick and wounded soldiers and aid to their dependent families; the organization also raised money to support the Union army with funds and supplies.

The volumes(except vol. 3) bear the AUTOGRAPH SIGNATURE of Gall on the versos of their half-titles to protect against pirated editions. In order to hold the price down Gall did not republish the magnificent folio-sized plates of the first edition for the second, and he deleted the portion on the descriptive anatomy of the brain and nervous system, concentrating on the physiology. Contemporary manuscript notes of Chirac's unpublished lectures on intermittent fevers, most likely taken by a student attending Chirac's medical courses at the University of Montpellier. Chirac taught at Montpellier from 1687 to 1708, then relocated to Paris where he enjoyed great success, becoming physician to Philippe d'Orléans and later to Louis XV. This atlas of six ethnographical maps were intended as a companion to Prichard's Natural History of Man, originally published in 1843, and the expanded five-volume edition of his Researches into the Physical History of Mankind (1836-1847 and subsequent eds.). The maps show the distribution of races and the physical history of mankind in Asia, Africa, Europe, the Americas and Oceania, and indicate the movement of cultures native to these continents over time. 1524. Lucas van Leyden (1494-1533). The surgeon and the peasant. Engraving, 116 75 mm., matted. Signed within the plate with Lucas's initial "L" and dated 1524. 2 or 3 very small and unobtrusive repairs. Very good impression. . Lucas's famous engraving of a typical barber-surgeon at work. "It has been suggested that this engraving is a subtle indictment of the barber-surgeon. He is shown wearing elegant attire, whereas his patient is portrayed as a poor country bumpkin. In the artistic language of the day the large, heavy purse below the surgeon's right arm signalled an undue preoccupation with money" (Rutkow, Surgery: An Illustrated History, p. 121). (the latter dated 15 August 1935); this latter signature also appears on p. 448. First Collected Edition of 22 surgical papers by Hayward, including a reprint of Garrison-Morton.com 6030 and 11913. Dods' enormously popular and often reprinted Six Lectures, together with his numerous public appearances, helped to spread the "gospel" of mesmerism throughout the eastern United States in the 1840s. "Dods expresses his belief in the power of the agent discovered by Mesmer, but rejects the term magnetism in favor of ‘mental electricity' or even ‘spiritualism' . . . Dods describes six degrees of mesmerism, the sixth being clairvoyance. He also mentions surgical uses for mesmerism" (Crabtree, Animal Magnetism, Early Hypnotism and Psychical Research 1766-1925, no. 473).
