Allen Tate was born in 1897 in Memphis, Tennessee. He attended the University of Kentucky and then the University of Chicago. Tate wrote poetry, essays, and plays, and he was a professor at the University of Iowa and the University of Texas. He died in 1986.

For Charles Champlin, formerly a writer-correspondent for Time and Life magazines and since 1965 an editor and columnist for the Los Angeles Times, his "other time" was the nineteen-thirties.
