Victorian anti-Catholic/anti-European satire or parody written in pseudo-scientific natural history jargon, complaining of the laziness, odd dress & weird habits (literally!), strange hours & stranger noises of various orders of monks, deposited of British shores by Papist Europeans of little merit and bad intent. Each major order of Monk is depicted & described in most unflattering terms. "Hence it is evident, that the monk forms a distinct class of mammalia, which holds a middle place, and forms a connecting link between man and monkey." "Dominican Monk.... Demeanor, hypocritical; gait, lascivious; expression of the countenance, perfidious; barks or yells, at midnight, with a harsh, discordant voice. Grand Forks ND: Author/Holt Printing Co., 1926. Anecdotes and history of these Victorian staples, and their origins in Kashmir; the author, od Scottish descent, visited weavers there in the early 20th century whom he had known in his childhood some 50 years earlier. INSCRIBED by the author to a friend; these were evidently privately printed as gifts. Laid in are four printed Christmas notes, each with a poem in Scots dialect by the Doctor, dated 1924, 1926, 1927, and 1932, along with a hand-written poem on a calling card dated 1919, and a small sprig of browned heather with another handwitten verse. Small hardcover, red cloth spine over terra-cotta boards, black titling. General wear to book, corners rubbed, minor smudging, minor damage in gutters with a couple of insignificant gaps; laid-in paper ephemera tanned & smudged, calling card with big ink spot. . Oversized pamphlet showing the steps in manufacture of silk thread & cloth, from silkworm eggs, the tending of the worm, extracting & spinning the thread, packaging for export, spinning & weaving cloth. Issued as part of a classroom kit including a cabinet (presumably of natural history and product samples) and chart. Includes photos of the four brothers (and their fine mustachios), Belding's mills & women's dorms, eggs & worms on leaves, cocoons & pupae, Japanese men & women rearing & feeding worms, reeling the cocoons, bales of raw silk; machines for winding, spinning, & twisting, stretching, reeling & dying, spooling, warping & weaving; some with men & women tending them. Reproduces trhe author's large collection of amateur photographs of (mostly) women in swimsuits, "Sifted from albums and shoeboxes", from the 1890s or so in to the 1950s, with a very few more recent, mostly b/w or sepia-toned, a few in color. Self-published through the Blurb website in 2008, no longer available there, nor can we discover anything about the collector.
