In the original binding of pale cloth: slight crimping of spine ends: firm and clean, although author's name on jacket has bled through faintly onto front board. Protected unclipped jacket rather tanned and soiled with 5mm closed tear to top edge.

Prelims quite ugly with foxing, text ok with occasional foxing and soiling to margins, and strip sliced from margin of one page. In the original binding of smooth black cloth, spine titled in green. Slightly marked and knocked, but firm and reasonably presentable.

Contents very fresh and unmarked, appears unread. In original black cloth-textured boards lettered in gilt: clean and bright, some extremities blunted. Unclipped pictorial dustjacket bright and fresh with slight knocks to edges.

Possible minimal bump to front upper corner. In protected unclipped dust jacket with tiny knock to base of upper joint.

Prefaced with an elusive ‘Suggestive’ by Amy Lothrop (Anna Bartlett Warner) concerning the identity of the author(s). Hull stationer’s blind-stamp to front free endpaper. Shallow stain to fore-edge of many pages, and some soiling, though a majority of pages in the middle of the book are clean and not stained. Some gatherings of pages protrude at fore-edge, but are not loose. Rather musty. Small octavo, in contemporary crimson cloth, boards decorated in blind, spine lettered in gilt: soiled and knocked but firm, gilt quite bright. 19thC editions of this title are scarce.

In the original binding of green cloth, front titled and decorated in blind, spine in gilt. Small marks at base of upper board, otherwise clean. Spine ends crimped. Chapter I: 'The Ponsforts came of a queer-tempered, hot-blooded, domineering race. It was Melville Carlingford, that arch-cynic, who likened their highly-prized eccentricities to the dog-show exhibit whose very deformities ensure it distinction...' Very good copy.
