The Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge was founded in 1826 with the high-minded aim of making 'useful' information available to self-taught members of the working and lower middle classes. Some of the material was decidedly abstruse, subscribers fell away and the Society was wound up in 1848; however, the series of 209 maps published over a 14 year period from 1829 onwards were highly praised for their superior quality, accuracy and aesthetic appeal and remain an outstanding achievement. Carmagnola, just south of Turin in Piedmont, was fought over and extensively remodelled in the mid seventeenth-century; it was briefly recaptured by the French in 1690, but its strategic importance declined and the defences were demolished thereafter. A later state of Robert de Vaugondy’s road map of Italy, showing the Venetian Republic, Papal States, Kingdom of Naples etc. The original date (1756) and privilege have been burnished from the plate, and Elizabeth Haussard has been replaced by Groux as engraver of the cartouche. Both the identity of Groux, and why his name was added to cartouches which were otherwise unaltered, remains mysterious (Pedley p. 67). Nuremberg, Anton Koberger, 1493. Woodcut, 25 x 53 cm, on sheet 42 x 60 cm, black and white, small stain in image, stitch holes at centrefold closed on verso, published in a German text edition with further text on verso. One of the earliest obtainable views of Florence, derived from a lost engraving by Francesco Rosselli. The woodcuts were created in the workshop of Michael Wolgemut and his stepson Wilhelm Pleydenwurff, possibly assisted by Albrecht Dürer (who was the godson of the book’s printer, Koberger). Hartmann Schedel's encylopedic ‘Liber Chronicarum’, widely known as the Nuremberg Chronicle, is deservededly one of the most famous incunables. As many as 2500 copies in either Latin or German may have been printed; it was instantly popular, widely distributed and hugely influential, perhaps the most significant illustrated secular work of the 15th century.
