London: Geoffrey Bles, 1971. Illustrated, pp 175, clean internally, blue cloth very slightly worn and slightly bowed, still a good copy in a dustwrapper which is a bit torn and soiled. [On 18 February 1807, as a helpless onlooker, Manby witnessed a Naval ship, the Snipe, run aground 60 yards off Great Yarmouth during a storm, with (according to some accounts) a total of 214 people drowned, including French prisoners of war, women and children. Following this tragedy, Manby experimented with mortars, and so invented the Manby Mortar, later developed into the breeches buoy, that fired a thin rope from shore into the rigging of a ship in distress. A strong rope, attached to the thin one, could be pulled aboard the ship. His successful invention followed an experiment as a youth in 1783, when he shot a mortar carrying a line over Downham church. Two volumes bound in one, two frontispieces, 12mo, pp viii, 253, (3); viii, 280, slightly weak internally, staining to the first few pages of volume one, then minor staining to the lower margin of the next few pages, tear to page 207/208 and slight adhesion damage to pages 207/212, with very slight loss of text, bound in contemporary green half calf and marbled boards, rubbed, spine head a little pulled..

[The histories of four famous American vessels, each bearing the name Grand Turk. The First (1781-1788), Second (1791-1795, Third (1812-1816), Fourth (1916-1924). The first was a privateer during the American War of Independence. It sailed twice commercially to the Indian Ocean with calls at Canton and was sold at Isle de France in 1788. A few illustrations, octavo, pp 416, a worn ex-library copy with stamps, lacking the frint endpaper, the half-title almost detached, otherwise tight internally, the original spine is loose in the book, and has been replaced with a paper spine taped on. A good working copy, but no more than that.. First Edition. Cloth. Poor.

Illustrated with a frontispiece, three plates, a double page map and a vignette title page, square octavo, pp (6), 135, all edges gilt, some foxing here and there, a couple of neat relevant pencil annotations, original green bevelled cloth, gilt lines and decoration on upper cover, slightly worn and rubbed, very neatly and professionally recased, keeping the original endpapers.
