Descripción:
An original publication, 1995. xx, 146 pp., illus., index This book is the result of research done by Ellen Clinkscales Smith Rippy on her Smith and Sullivan family lines. Much of her work on the Sullivan history was facilitated by research previously available from other members of the family on the Sullivans, Brownlees, Dunklins, Hueys, Walkers, Clinkscales, Moorheads, and Gilkeys. Research into the Smith line was made more difficult because of some apparent conflicts in the line of descent and a lack of availability of authentic records. But, she finally placed the Smiths on the Broad River at Smith's Ford, in Cherokee County. John Smith was buried on this land and information on his headstone indicated that he had been born in Botetourt County, Virginia. Further research established that John's father was Henry Smith who had come to South Carolina from the Upper Shenandoah Valley area of Virginia. From the Smith's Ford location in South Carolina, children would later move into Anderson County and… Leer más

Descripción:
Orig. pub. Philadelphia 1824. Reprinted 1975. Print on Demand Edition 2019. (vi), 511, xlvii pp. Henry Lee published this work in response to aspersions cast upon his father, "Light Horse" Harry Lee, by chroniclers of the American Revolution, in particular Justice William Johnson of South Carolina. Notwithstanding the son's obvious bias, the volume is a standard source for the history of the Revolution in the South. The author covers background events in the life of General Nathanael Greene, and stresses heavily the activities of Lee in South Carolina, at Guilford Court House, in overall relation to the Southern Strategy, at Augusta, at Eutaw Springs, and at John's Island. The Appendix contains correspondence between Washington, Greene, Lafayette, Lee, and others and is especially revealing as to the character of the officers involved and the concerns of some over the necessity of maintaining the public morale.

Descripción:
Orig. pub. Baltimore 1894. Reprinted 1971, 1992. Print on Demand Edition 2009. 136 pp. The North Carolina coast in the colonial period furnished a haven for pirates, for its inlets and islands enabled those overly romanticized brigands, who preyed on the extensive shipping industry of Charleston, South Carolina, to escape pursuit. Drawn from colonial records and legislation, this book gives an authentic presentation of the pirate problem as it confronted not only North Carolina but also South Carolina and to a certain extent Virginia. One in a series of monographs under the auspices of Johns Hopkins University and the general editorship of Herbert Baxter Adams, this volume remains a standard source for those interested in both the glamour and the social consequences of piracy The author examines how the pirates arose, how they were regarded by the colonists and English authorities, how they affected life and commerce, and how they were exterminated. This presentation is enlivened with accounts of two… Leer más

(viii), iv, 364, viii, 373-396, illus., maps Upper South Carolinians who risked their lives and fortunes in the Revolutionary War faced neighbors who had remained loyal to the Crown and hostile Cherokee Indians. The British were instrumental in stirring up the Cherokees, who occupied land now comprising Greenville, Anderson, Pickens, and Oconee counties. A major campaign against the Indians was fought by upper South Carolinians, Georgians, western North Carolinians, and Tennesseans within the framework of the Revolution. These and many other facts of the early history of the South Carolina Upcountry are detailed in this classic work on the Colonial period and Revolutionary War campaigns in the Upcountry. The book covers the Upper South Carolina governmental organization at the beginning of the Revolution and goes on to detail the battles in the region. Descripción:
Orig. pub. Raleigh NC 1890. Reprinted 1973. Print on Demand Edition 2021. (ii), (iv), 242 pp. Gen. Hugh Waddell was a leading colonial and military official in North Carolina during the French and Indian War. This book, written by his great-grandson, Alfred Moore Waddell, gives much detail of his activities during the progress of the French and Indian War in the Southern colonies. While concentrating on North Carolina, there is information on his involvement in Virginia and South Carolina as well. His important role in resisting the landing of stamps during the Stamp Act crisis in 1765 is described in full. He also took part in leading troops against the Regulators but then later was critical of Governor Tryon for his harsh treatment in dealing with the rebels. Waddell died at an early age but he is still an important figure for his pre-Revolutionary activities. He was born in Lisburn, County Down, Ireland, the son of Hugh and Isabella Brown Waddell, both of Scots-Irish ancestry. He married Mary… Leer más

Descripción:
Orig. pub.1988. Print on Demand Edition 2016. Three volumes, 1,016 pp., 37 maps, new introduction and indexes Henry Augustus Middleton Smith was a federal judge, attorney, scholar, landowner, and successful planter who fostered historical studies of South Carolina through his own writings and through his position as vice president of the South Carolina Historical Society for twenty years. His studies of the towns, plantations, baronies, and river communities of the early colonial period appeared regularly in the South Carolina Historical (and Genealogical) Magazine and are considered to be path-breaking in methodology and historical perspective. Working from land records (colonial grants, inventories, memorials, wills, warrants, and plats), Smith traced ownership of land, constructed genealogies of the planter families, and devised an unusual series of large maps to illustrate his articles. Of necessity, the maps have been reduced to print in these volumes but they are still useful to indicate the… Leer más

Descripción:
Orig. pub. London 1779. Reprinted 1962, 1971. Print on Demand Edition 2015. The set Dr. Alexander Hewatt (or Hewat) is known as the first historian of South Carolina and is best known for this two-volume work. He was a Presbyterian minister in Charleston from 1763 to 1777. Not sympathetic with the Patriot cause, he returned to England in 1775 but remained interested in South Carolina until his death in 1828. While the books are primarily South Carolina material with a strong Charleston and lowcountry emphasis, he also devotes considerable space to Virginia, North Carolina as a part of the Carolinas colony, and Georgia, in particular in Volume II. His history includes observations of the peoples of the area, accounts of slaves and the institution of slavery, and accounts of the Indians. He pays due attention to agriculture and economics in the colony. In his discussion of political events, he was obviously biased against the Proprietors and the Anglican Church but for the Royal government and the… Leer más

The set This two-volume history of South Carolina, written by a Charleston physician, legislator, and one of the first historians of the state, covers the events of South Carolina history from 1670 to 1808. The second volume is valuable for its social and economic history, statistical accounts, and biographical sketches. Volume 1 deals with civil history - an account of the proprietary government from 1670 to 1719 and the royal government from 1720 to 1776 - and military history from 1670 to 1776, including contests with the Spanish, the Indians, and pirates in addition to its coverage of the Revolution. Orig. pub. Boston 1883. Reprinted 1965, 1966, 1969. Print on Demand Edition 2016. the set This is the "classic" work on the history of Georgia through the Revolutionary War by Charles Colcock Jones Jr., one of the most versatile and prolific historical writers of all time. He was the first native-born Georgian to write a history of his state. In his U.S. IANA, Wright Howes called this a "most scholarly history of the colonial and revolutionary period of this state." The history received accolades from fellow historians for "its style and extensive use of original sources." Volume One deals with the aboriginal and colonial times while Volume Two covers the revolutionary period. Georgia was founded by James Oglethorpe, a young philanthropist who was inspired to find a refuge for "unfortunate individuals, confined for debt, of respectable connections and guilty of no crime." In granting the charter for the colony in 1732, the King was motivated by the anxiety of the Carolinians to establish a buffer to… Leer más
