Over a century after his death, William Stanley Jevons (1835-82) is still universally regarded as one of Britain's greatest and most original economists. Influenced by Bentham's utilitarianism, he considered economics to be a calculus of pleasure and pain. He applied the discipline of a natural scientist, giving an emphasis to mathematical economics that proved to be profoundly influential.
