Paul T. Collins worked fifty-one years as a railroader including many decades for the Atchison Topeka and Santa Fe Railroad. He began at the age of sixteen as a station attendant, became a telegraph operator, moved on to dispatcher and chief dispatcher, and then trainmaster before ending his career as rules examiner. He worked all over the Southwest as well as in Chicago and New York City. The railroad helped bust up his first marriage. He married a second time to a woman who had a career and perhaps a better understanding of the life of a railroader. That second marriage produced a daughter. Once Paul retired, he finished writing the story of his life in a book dedicated to that daughter. He had started the book right after World War II ended because he found writing relaxed him. I Never Worked In Pocatello -The Life and Times of Santa Fe Railroad's Paul T. Collins is that book. Bob Anderson has had a lifelong interest in books, trains and the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railroad. Those interests helped prepare him for editing this book. His previous jobs (selling Life magazine over the telephone, serving as a congressional aide in Pennsylvania and Washington, D.C., translating Russian radio communications for the Air Force, and directing a research division at a university) all helped prepare him for understanding the life of Paul T. Collins. Sandy Schauer is the author of The Silk Scarf and The Jewelry Box, two historical novels, and coauthor of The History of New Mexico Press Women 1949-2009. A trained journalist, she writes newsletters, articles and other pieces as part of her daily life. She and Bob have been longtime friends of Patricia Collins Lister, the daughter for whom Paul T. Collins wrote the story of his life. Sandy has a lifelong interest in books and reading. Her interest in trains and people associated with trains comes from accompanying Bob on train-chasing excursions and the train books in their home.
