The well-known maxim 'das Land ohne Musik', often erroneously attributed to Brahms, offers an apposite description of the perception of Britain in the nineteenth century by her continental neighbours, for the thriving culture she had enjoyed in the Renaissance had remained largely unchallenged until the birth of the movement generally known as the English musical renaissance in the closing years of the nineteenth century.
