Sobre este artículo

Some rubbing of cover, paper of front hinge cracked. 599 pages.
This famous book depicts all aspects of ordinary and extraordinary life in the Renaissance, from the historical context to feudal and communal rights and privileges, the private lives of nobles, townsfolk and peasants, food, cooking, mining and the hunt. In 440 engravings and 15 beautifully colored lithographs by the German lithographer Franz Kellerhoven (1814-1872) Lacroix shows everything from dancing and commerce to professions and finances, knights in armor, jesters, ethnic groups, dress and court proceedings, bizarre happenings, executions, torture, etc. An exhaustive and fascinating work, particularly for its extraordinary assemblage of prints and illustrations.

Paul Lacroix (1806-1884), author and journalist, was a prolific writer on a great variety of subjects, including history, particularly that of the Renaissance and its manners, customs and dress, and everything from culture to prostitution and libraries and books.

This book belonged to Wilhelmina, Duchess of Cleveland (Catherine Lucy Wilhelmina Powlett, [1819-1901]), and bears her 1901 bookplate, as well as her signature. She was the mother of Queen Victoria's Prime Minister Archibald Primrose, 5th Earl of Rosebery, a maid of honor at Victoria's coronation and a bridesmaid at her wedding to Prince Albert. She was also known for her genealogical work on The Battle Abbey Roll of William the Conqueror.
