New York: Pudney & Russell, 1845. 2nd ed. Paperback. Very Good. 93p. Original blue cloth. 16 cm. Cover rubbed around edges and also scuffed. Bookplate ("Abraham Lawrence"). First published in 1854 and reissued in 1855 (2nd ed.) and 1856 (3rd ed.). Includes two essays: (I) The Question at Issue (pages 5-42); and (II) European Protection of Oriental Christianity (pages 43-93). Southgate traveled extensively in the Middle East before being consecrated in 1844 as a Missionary Bishop for the Ottoman Empire by the Episcopal Church in the United States of America. He served in this role until 1849 when he returned to the United States and served churches in Maine, Massachusetts, New York and Virginia.
