[Fayette and Glasgow, Missouri. Variously printed by Benson and Green and Clark H. Green. 1846. 1847. 1849. 1850. Each 12pp.] Four school catalogues; pamphlets; removed; without wrappers; light foxing; very good.
Four catalogs from Howard High School in Fayette, Missouri with lists of trustees, teachers, and pupils and other information about the school's educational program.
Present here are the second, third, fifth, and sixth annual catalogs during which time William T. Lucky was Superintendent and Principal of the Female Deprtment.
Howard High School traces its roots back to 1820 and the founding of Franklin Academy and to that academy's co-educational successor school, Howard College. "As early as 1841 the Methodist Episcopal Church [South] had an interest in the school, even to the point of appointing an agent for the school. Howard High School had 250-300 pupils in 1852."¹ The high school subsequently evolved into both Howard Female College and Central College, today Central Methodist University.
The 1840s was an important formative era for Howard High School and Methodist education in Missouri:
"In 1844, the Howard High school with Professor Carr W. Pritchett at the head of it, was attracting students from all parts of Central Missouri. While the institution was called a high school the standards were as high as some small colleges. The prestige of the Howard High school was of much advantage to the Central colleges in their earlier years. Among the laymen who held leadership for Fayette in the battle for location [of the school] was Abiel Leonard.²"
Abiel Leonard's name appears in the list of trustees of Howard High School in the present third and fifth catalogs.
Four rare annual catalogs for antebellum Howard High School in Fayette, Missouri. None of the four titles are found on OCLC as individual or serial entries.
