Littleton NH.: Frances Ann Johnson / Sherwin-Dodge Printers., 1955. No date. Circa 1955. Trade paperback. Fine.. Brusseau, Claude L (Artwork by).. 1 40 p. Color photo paper covers showing New Hampshire's iconic profile "Old Man of the Mountains" w/ black titles on yellow background. 4x6 in. Stapled binding. B&W art. In 1805, the rock profile in the Franconia NH region was first seen and recorded by exploring white men, Luke Brooks and Francis Whitcomb. They were building a road through the Notch. Nathaniel Hawthorne wrote a story about the Great Stone Face, first published January 24, 1850 in Whittier's magazine, "The National Era". Appearing in other forms later, the story became the best-known about the Old Man of the Mountains. In 1945, the Old Man profile became New Hampshire's official Trade Mark. In succeeding years, the state continued to repair and bolster the granite profile, preserving it. But the turn of the century brought its overnight downfall. That event came much later than this book.
