A good tight green cloth binding, edges rubbed and bumped. Illustrated front board, image dulled. Titles in red to both front board and spine. Smooth spine dulled and rubbed. Endpapers lightly foxed. Handwritten dedication to front endpaper: "Hettie Tutin from J. H. S. to remember June 15th-20th 1901." Also; bookseller's blind stamp to front endpaper: "W. H. Smith & Son, London". Half-title present. Black & white photo frontispiece + 29 further black & white photo plates within the text, pages toned. G+. ** "Van-dwellers are, like the majority of mankind, as a class, neither scamps nor heroes. But if they are not better cared for, especially as regards the education of their children, they will contribute less that their proper share to the honour and credit of the nation in the times that are coming".
