Sobre este artículo

Salem, Massachusetts: The Salem Press, 1891. 1st Edition . Hardcover. See Description. Tall 4to (312 mm). Limited edition, large paper copy with wide margins; pp. xiii (in fact, 15), [1], 161, [1]. With 5 plates including the frontispiece "printed from the same plates used in Hon. C.W. Upham's work." No statement other than "limited edition" appears to indicate the number of copies printed on large paper. Bound in full dark green (almost black) Morocco with gilt inner dentelles and marbled end papers. Binding contains some areas of rubbing and wear; several small spots have received a color touch-up. The upper joint to the rear cover is carefully restored. The "S" in Salem is partially obscured on the gilt spine title. Interior pages are generally clean. The 0uter and bottom edges of the book block are deckled/untrimmed. Caroline Upham was the daughter-in-law of Charles W. Upham (1802-1875) a U.S. Representative from Massachusetts who published "Lectures on Salem witchcraft" (1831) and his famous and extensive work "Salem Witchcraft with an account of Salem Village" (1867). Caroline Upham prepared her "Outline" as a sketch or epitome of her father-in-law's "History." Her preface states: "Having been desired by the heirs of the late Charles W. Upham to draw freely from the 'History', paragraphs from it have been woven into the sketch giving strength to the little story. As 'Salem Witchcraft in Outline' has come into being in the same room where the 'History' was born, the writer hopes there may be one point of resemblance between them, a staying quality." Apparently, several editions of Caroline Upham's "Outline" appeared in 1891. Most copies were printed in a small octavo size. The frontispiece depicts the Philip English house in Salem. Other plates illustrate the Rebecca Nurse homestead, Danvers; the Jacobs house, Danvers; the autographs of William Phips, Jonathan Corwin, John Hawthorne, John Proctor; the autographs of Philip English, Mary English, Mercy Lewis, Nicholas Noyes, Ann Putnam. [Cornell Witchcraft, p. 567 - only lists the 8vo. volume].
