The book is string bound between two, green, illustrated paper covers. This early edition differs from later ones as it is housed in a 3-paneled folder of green cloth over boards. Interior of folder has a full-width pastedown. Has 2 cloth closures that wrap from front to back and are held fast with tapered ivory or bone pegs. Titles blind stamped in silver and a stylized painting of an arrangement as a paper label pasted down to the front. Has List of Illustrations, Glossary, Bibliography of Western language and Japanese works, and Sources of Illustrations used in creating the book's line drawings.
