Melbourne: The Spectator Publishing Company Limited. 1891. First Edition. Illustrated, original red cloth binding with title in gold across front cover above blind impression of a native, new endpapers. The Rev Carey was a missionary in Fiji from 1859 to 1875 and wrote this epic in the 1860's. The poem is a history of some 130 years of Fijian history, from the first appearance of whites, interspersed with myth, manners and customs of the people, with words of wisdom from their sages. The hero is Fiji's great king Seru or Thakombau (Cacabou). ; 250 x 190mm; 432 pages .
