Francisco Javier Vingut (1823-1857), a Cuban, came to the United States in 1848 and taught modern languages at New York University, 1848-1857. Editor of several Spanish-language newspapers and the author of book for the study of Spanish, French, and English, he also published an anthology, Gems of Spanish Poetry (New York, 1855). His wife, Gertrude Fairfield Vingut, also an author, was the daughter of Sumner Lincoln Fairfield (1803-1844), the teacher, poet, and editor the North American Magazine from 1832 to 1838. Uncommon.
