The first view on the left of the sheet illustrates Biblical Jerusalem as the "Ancient city in its full splendor at the time of Christ". The procession of Jesus to Golgotha, with Judas hanging from a tree outside the city walls is depicted.<br><br>The view on the right shows the modern city during the 16th century, "New city of Jerusalem described in its form and situation in our times". Each view is accompanied by legends listing the important buildings and places marked on the plan. In the lower right, an engraving shows Moses receiving the Commandments on Mt. Sinai along with Aaron. A table identifying the garments and accoutrements worn by Aaron. <br><br> The view is one of the three views of the city Braun and Hobenberg published in their famous city atlas "Civitates Orbis Terraru," a collection of city views and plans created as a companion to Ortelius' "Theatrum Orbis Terrarum" and published between 1572 and 1617. Latin text on verso. The view is in very good condition with full original margins. Minor wear along original centerfold and minor foxing.<br><br>Georg Braun (1541-1622) was a Catholic cleric who edited the "Civitates orbis terrarum," a collection of 546 prospects, bird's-eye views and maps of international cities. Hogenberg created the tables for the first 4 volumes. Together, these two geographers created a work that set new standard for cartography for the next century. This uncolored view is a beautiful example of their work.<br/><br/>
