Pieter Harting was 19th-century Dutch scientist who is best remembered for his contributions to the development and use of the microscope and microscopy. He published what proved to be the greatest book on microscopy, titled simple 'The Microscope', which provided lessons on using the microscope as well as covering designs for lens improvements.
It should be noted that Harting was one of the earliest supporters of Charles Darwin's evolutionary theories, many of which were endorsed by Harting's microscope findings. In fact, according to Darwin scholar Eve-Marie Engels, Harting was "one of the most influential" of all 19th-century scientists and philosophers.
This 1848 Dutch edition of 'The Microscope' is illustrated with 18 impressive folding engravings featuring numerous figures depicting microscope parts, lenses, cells, burners, and scalpels.

A rare printing of Valerius's "Dictorum et Factorum" or Historical Anecdotes. This work is a collection of short stories, sayings, and phrases, memorial to Tiberius Caesar, who was reigning during Valerius' lifetime. These anecdotes depict ancient Greek life and philosophy as well as famous kings and Caesars. Many modern historians claim that Valerius's work was taken from Cicero, Livy, and Sallust, as well as other ancient historians and philosophers, rather than creating original works.
However, many of the topics he writes about were controversial and unusual for the time – he wrote on homosexuality within the Roman army and the aristocracy of ancient Greece. Julius Caesar's war commentaries are some of the most prolific military writings! While not specifically known for his writing, Julius Caesar wrote this book which would become a mainstay in the Latin literature canon. It focuses on first-hand account of Julius Caesar in the Callic wars, but it was written as though from a third-person view.

This 1727 edition was published in Cambridge and includes notes and commentary by Joannes Brantius, Pedro Chacon, Francis Hotman and John Davies. It should be noted that included in this edition is Aulus Hirtius' Bellum Alexandrinum and his continuation of Caesar's De bello Gallico.

1752 English Reformation Burnet Henry VIII Elizabeth I Portraits Anne Boleyn

As a response to Nicolas Sanders's attack on the English Reformation, Gilbert Burnet published a rebuttal that covered the reign of Henry VIII, through the reign of Elizabeth I. The work saw such success and popularity that his reputation was enhanced and the English Parliament gave thanks to Burnet after the completion of the work. Other notable figures mentioned include Anne Boleyn, Edward VI, Hugh Latimer, Thomas Cranmer, Queen Mary, and still others.

Burnet gives evidences of the difficulties and challenges that the Church of England faced against Catholics and the government as a whole. He also defended his doctrines in this work and "confirmed them in another sermon, in which he also made some reflections on Bishops" that were impactful in English reforms.
