London: John Murray, 1837. (UK) 60th Edition This copy has one signature missing, not removed, but missing. When one looks at the top edge of pages, there is no gap. This missing pages are from 193 to 209 inclusive and cover the recipes from pies and pasties. Front fly and rear fly has ink marks, owner's signature, no other markings, pages quite clean, with wear to the cover edges, cover panels soiled. The spine had split at the edge where it meets the front cover; this has been rebacked. Tight copy with the interior pages quite clean, Good overall. 18 x 11 cm, original grey boards with green leather spine and paper title label, new endpapers, frontis showing kitchen scene with game, rabbit and fish in foreground, [i titlepage-v], vi-liv, [1], 2-448pp, index. John Murray, London, 1832 [2, blank], liv, 36*,37#, 448 printed pages. Complete with 9 engraved plates (two with historic repairs on the versos), somewhat foxed. Some gatherings becoming loose. Contemporary ink gift inscription on unnumbered preliminary page. Most leaves lightly foxed. Hinges split. 10.5 x 17 cm. Contemporary full and richly patinated vellum, slightly rubbed with missing triangle of vellum on the upper front hinge. Corners slightly worn. Recipes for stewed tongue, prawn curry, thornback, sauce Robart, buttered orange, many sophisticated now obsolete recipes; many instructions on dealing with servants. The Dictionary of National Biography: "the earliest manual of household management with any pretensions to completeness." The 1st edition of 1806 had only 290 pages. It went through dozens of editions, both legitimate and pirated, in both Britain and the United States (where the first edition was published in 1807).. Hardcover. Fair.

A new edition corrected. 449 pages with engraved frontispiece and nine other plates, all present. a nice complete copy of this scarce cookery volume prepared by one of the well know cookery experts of her day. The first page is for the use of the mistress of the family and begins " In every rank, those deserve the greatest praise , who best aquit themselves of the duties which their station requires" This copy has been rebound in dark green covers with gilt title to spine , new end-papers with inscription by a previous owner dated 1926 possibly when it was rebound, Contents are generally clean with some odd foxing spots and light wear to page and plate edges. Binding firm. Pictures available.

The most influential and important early 19th century English cookbook; first published in 1806. Bound in contemporary marbled papers over boards with a leather spine and corners. Gilded banding on the spine and a black label with gilded lettering. General wear and rubbing to edges and covers with scuffing. Internally split between 'Direction to the Binder' and 'Contents' but all pages present and attached. Title and Advertisement page trimmed at the top (1/4 inch, no impact to text or content). A comprehensive general cookery book with Part XII being "Cookery for the Sick and for the Poor" and Part XIII being "Various Receipts and Directions to Servants." Also included are "Miscellaneous Observations for the Use of the Mistress of a Family." Has been described as "the most popular English cookbook of the first half of the nineteenth century.
