William Edmondstoune Aytoun (1813 – 1865) was a Scottish poet, lawyer by training, and professor of rhetoric and belles lettres at the University of Edinburgh. He published poetry, translation, prose fiction, criticism and satire and was a lifelong contributor to the Edinburgh literary periodical Blackwood's Magazine. He was also a collector of Scottish ballads. In the early 1850s, Professor Aytoun lent his name as a supporter of the fledgling National Association for the Vindication of Scottish Rights. His distinctive legacy as a teacher has led to him being called the 'first modern professor of English Literature'.

The Lays relate to episodes of Scottish history and each is preceded by an essay or note on the historical episode concerned.

Dark blue cloth with gold titles, red lion on shileld device, chamfered edges to covers, dark brown endpapers, viii, 359pp. Aytoun was trained as a lawyer but by his own admission, although he followed the law he was never able to overtake it. He wrote for Blackwood's Magazine and now is chiefly remember for Lays of the Scottish Cavaliers. Published in 1849, this was a collection of jacobite ballads that achieved wide popularity in its time. (1.6 JM HOQ 103/b2. Hardcover. Very Good/No Jacket. 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall.
