In the original unprinted glassine jacket. Owner ink stamp and ink annotations on endpapers. Jacket creases and edges chipped, age toned. Reprint of the 1886 first edition. Bancroft engaged (but did not credit) Petrof to research and translate Russian documentation of its eastward expansion from the 16th century, and his writing constitutes the first half of this volume. Bates wrote the last third. Gruening was first U.S. Senator from Alaska and ex-governor of the Territory. Annotation reads in part "Deep Creek Look-out near village of Ninilchik, July 1961.

Fold out map has never been folded out. Chapters include: The Century March of the Cossacks; The Kamchutka Expeditions; Death of Bering; The Swarming of the Promyshleniki; Exploration and Trade; The Billings Scientific Expedition Colonization and Missions; Founding of Sitka; The Sitka Massacre; Foreign Ventures and the Ross Colony, etc. There is perhaps a stain on the bottom spine edge which discolored the gilt on the bottom page edges near the spine. The stain on the bottom spine edge I didn't really notice until I saw the discoloration of the gilt. There are no stains on the inside of the pages, just to the gilt on the page edges.
