Black cloth lettered in red at the spine and upper board. Publisher's maroon stain to the top edge. Tips of two corners gently knocked, backstrip lettering very slightly defective and with a single miniscule nick to the cloth. An extremely crisp and bright copy in the quite striking octopus dust wrapper, price-clipped, lightly tanned at spine panel, a little dust marked and with a tiny area of loss to the lower edge of the rear panel, another enclosed fraction of loss to the spine panel and a third, slightly larger area to the head of the spine panel, impacting the first word of the title. SIGNED BY THE AUTHOR ON FRONT FREE ENDPAPER. Cape's advertisement leaf, printed on yellow stock and promoting Nichols' 'Down the Graden Path' (the first of his keenly sought-after garden titles), is tipped-in at rear free endpaper. This leaf is very often missing. Some six years before the event Nicholas is forecasting the coming of WWII and here delivers a clear exposition of his (subsequently notorious) pacifist outlook. In later life, this work was to assume for its writer significant personal value. SIGNED COPIES ARE SCARCE.

Else a near fine book in a nearly fine dust jacket, unusually bright with some faint creasing at spine panel. A outspoken pacifist and anti-war activist, Nichols states his case against the impending World War.

Handwritten letter from Nichols to a Mrs. Bowman, probably written about the time of this book's publication as the book was gifted to the recipient by a third party (Clive & Erica), with the gift inscription on the ffe, and dated, Christmas, 1934. The letter is pasted to the ffe. 'Hurrah! The doctor says I can get up after lunch and come to Bethlehem provided I go to bed before dinner, and don't talk too much, or smoke! So if you can bear it, a smokeless mute will arrive at your house, heavily veiled, at about 2 o'clock. B.N.' At the bottom of the letter is penned (presumably by Mrs Bowman) her impressions of Mr Nichols during their short visit. A few words are difficult to decipher, and one phrase seems contradictory, but here it is as best we can make out, 'Oddly enough, I think he is rather sensitive generally, and broad-minded, but rather unstable.
