Moderate cracking to gutters and hinges causing some looseness to binding but pages remain attached. Boards have moderate corner bumping and edge-wear with visible tanning and scuffing overall. Spine has heavier tanning with prominent loss and crushing to ends. Book has a slight forward lean.

Ownership sticker of an Asheville NC woman on flyleaf, and old signature of Robert W. Barnwell on title page. We are assuming this would be the South Carolina senator and congressman (1801-1882) who was an American slave owner, planter, lawyer, and educator from South Carolina who served as a Senator in both the United States Senate and that of the Confederate States of America. Barnwell was a public defender of slavery and secession; he personally owned at least 128 enslaved persons.
