Descripción:
Paris: A. and W. Galignani, 1821. [Tragedy] FIRST PARIS EDITION. Octavo (18 x 11cm), pp.[4]; 271; [1]. Brown half calf, Shell marbled paper over boards. Grey label with gilt titles, gilt bands, and blind-tooled designs to spine. Edges speckled black. Blue endpapers. Original bookmarking ribbon loosely inserted. Interior bright, though moderately spotted and foxed throughout. Endpapers toned with some discolouration. Bookplate to front paste-down, faint pencil marks to rear paste-down. Top edge toned. Some rubbing to marbled boards, light soiling to calf. Minor wear to joints and binding extremities. Very good. After visiting the Palazzo Ducale and glimpsing the shrouded portrait of the disgraced former doge Marino Faliero, Byron conceived this drama presenting the story behind his failed coup d'etat in 1355. The ploy is widely thought to have begun when the patrician youth Michele Steno carved an insult about Faliero's wife into the doge's throne.

Descripción:
John Murray, London, 1821 XXI, [1], 261, [1] printed pages. The first issue with the Doge's speech on page 151 consisting of only five and a half lines and only 21 lines on page 154. Set in Venice in 1355, "Marino Faliero, Doge of Venice" is a blank verse tragedy in five acts by Lord Byron, who was inspired to take on this subject when, on examining the portraits of the Doges in the Palazzo Ducale in Venice, he discovered that the portrait of Faliero had been blacked out. The first of Byron's two Venetian plays, a well-documented historical drama about the Doge who turned traitor to the Venetian Republic. Marino Faliero, recently elected Doge of Venice, offends one of the chief officers of state, Michel Steno. Steno retaliates by writing on the Doge's throne an indecent libel on Faliero's wife. For this he is tried by the Council of Forty and convicted, but is only sentenced to a month's imprisonment. Faliero is so outraged by this, as he believes, inadequate punishment… Leer más

London: John Murray, 1821. First edition, first issue of Byron's posthumously published tragedy with the Doge's speech on p. 151 that begins "What crimes ?" Octavo, bound in full contemporary calf with a black morocco spine label lettered in gilt, gilt ruling to the spine and panels, marbled endpapers. In very good condition. Marino Faliero, Doge of Venice is a blank verse tragedy in five acts by Lord Byron, published and first performed in 1821. Byron was inspired to take on this subject when, on examining the portraits of the Doges in the Palazzo Ducale in Venice, he discovered that the portrait of Faliero had been blacked out. The main historical source he drew on was Marino Sanuto's Vite dei Dogi (published posthumously 1733). He completed the play in July 1820, by which time he was living in Ravenna, and published it in April 1821, along with his The Prophecy of Dante. He intended to dedicate it to Goethe, but delays in the post between Italy and England resulted in the play being published… Leer más
