Attractively bound in half warm brown leather over tan cloth, color frontis, many additional black and white plates printed on a parchment colored background, 8.25" tall. Some expected edgewear, light chipping to spine foot, some finger smudging to the cover cloth, good hinges, sound text block, foxing to half-title, clean pages, no names or other markings.. Hard Cover. Good. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.

Good condition. xii, 666pp with 39 full-page illustrations from original drawings by Phiz. Publishers slip at title page states "This Edition, which has been specially prepared for Subscribers, is not obtainable through the general Booksellers." Endpapers browning. Brown slightly stained embossed boards with gilt decoration & title on spine. Split on back hinges. .

Handsomely bound for Henry Sotheran Ltd. in early twentieth-century half brown calf over red-brown linen boards, the spine with five raised bands and titles in gilt. Top edge gilt. Pale marbled endpapers. Illustrated with an engraved portrait frontispiece, with tissue-guard, and 39 further engraved plates by Halbot Knight Browne (aka 'Phiz'). Lacking the half-title. A very good copy, the binding square and tight. The contents with spotting to the plates (heavier to some), two plates with minor tears neatly repaired with tissue verso, and a stain to the bottom margin of one plate, are otherwise in good order. The first edition in book form of Dickens's third novel, originally issued in parts between 1838 and 1839, smartly bound for Sotheran's of London during the early twentieth century.

Five raised bands, gilt decorated compartments and titles in gilt to the spine. All edges marbled. Half title discarded by the binder. Portrait frontispiece of the author [in the first state], engraved by Finden from a painting by Maclise. Illustrated with 39 full pages plates by "Phiz". A handsome copy, the binding square and firm with minor rubbing to the extremities. The contents, with the bookplate to the front pastedown and contemporary ownership name of William Frederick Fownes Tighe, Lord Lieutenant of Kilkenny (1794-1878) at the head of the title page and some spotting to the plate margins are otherwise clean throughout. A very attractive example. Nicholas Nickleby originally appeared in 20 numbers, bound in 19 monthly parts between April 1838 and October 1839. The novel was first published in book… Leer más
