A pastedown to the FFEP describes the Christy Edition - the commission to Mr. Christy to produce, 112 pp, 13 full-color pictures, in a box, etc. Includes color frontispiece, decorated title page, two additional color plates, sample text pages with additional illustrations (some repeated several times), and a number of blank pages at the end. ; 9" x 11-1/2"; Front board with spots of soiling along edge, a 1-1/2" frayed area along right edge and some wear at the corners. Rear board with light scratches and corner wear. Rippling to front free endpaper pastedown with evidence of label? removal inside front cover. No inscriptions, pages are clean and unmarked. .

Dust jacket restored with archival backing and color touch-up along edges and folds, with evidence of prior chips and tears at corners and along folds, current scuffing along front folds, and a bit of a textured sheen to surface as a result of the backing. Boards lightly bumped along edges. Bindings is sound and pages unmarked.

Bound in a signed (B.S.:Bertha Stuart) designed binding of green cloth decorated with yellow flowers and green stems, lettering gilt within gilt frame, spine in blind, minor wear to corners, no names or bookplates. A very good copy with just a bit of toning to outer margins.

Howard Chandler Christy's art of elegant, attractive women led to him being hailed as the successor to Charles Dana Gibson, and the "Gibson Girl" of the 1890s and 1900s was soon replaced by the "Christy Girl" of the 1910s. Christy would go on to illustrate a number of famous WWI recruitment posters, including the iconic 1917 "Gee I wish I were a Man, I'd Join the Navy." THE LADY OF THE LAKE was published just as the popularity of the Christy Girl was approaching its zenith, and showcases the artist's talent for depicting beautiful women (and men).
