New York.: Farrar Straus and Cudahy., 1960. Hard cover. Very good in fair dust jacket. Price clipped. Damp-stain patch to jacket interior. Jacket spine darkening, tears. Back jacket cover soiling, 1-inch vertical tear at top rear. Jacket tears repaired w/ clear tape inside.. Smolich, Catherine (Jacket by).. 1 Black cloth over boards. Spine titles in orange, white, gray. 160p., 19cm. Illustrated cover. Fiction about a marital arrangement tactfully written for its early 20th century era. A wife with "a roving and egocentric husband" accepts into their home another woman, not as a rival, but as an ally who "seconds" her in keeping her husband within bounds. The second woman is seduced by the husband, but the theme is not about polygamy, but about two women determined in common not to become antagonists. This novel is the only one by Colette in which she does not obviously play a role.
