Two outrageously large folding maps to rear, the first an (approx. 66" wide) "Profile of the Route by Grand Portage and the Pigeon River from Lake Superior to Rainy Lake", and the second (approx. 79" x 47") of the Region between Fort William (i.e. Thunder Bay) on Lake Superior and the Great Saskatchewan River. Also contains a smaller fold out map showing the routes connecting the Atlantic to the Pacific. Quite shelfworn, binding faded and scuffed, spine cracked with two prominent holes, ink inscription to front pastedown; good. Printed by Order of the Legislative Assembly.

Spine worn, chip to head, lower two inches missing, boards rubbed, corners scuffed, front free endpaper loose, text signatures separated from boards, ends occasionally chipped and brittle, maps complete with minor creasing; tears only at the edges and margins not affecting maps themselves; fair with good contents and still a useful copy of this important document.. 45 pp. + maps [3]. Folio. Dawson's 1857-58 expeditions to the rough country beyond Lake Superior resulted in his 1859 report and to his eventual hiring to construct the line of communication in 1868 which he first proposed in this report. One coloured map showing 'The Route by Road & Navigation for Connecting the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans' and two very large fold-out maps affixed amongst the rear endpapers showing the 'Profile of Route by the Grand Portage and Pigeon River from Lake Superior to Rainy Lake' and a 'Plan Showing the Region Explored by S.J. Dawson and his party between Fort William and the great Saskatchewan River'. This version includes a letter by Bishop Tache (the Bishop of St. Boniface) on the Red River Settlement wherein he derisively remarks on the presence of 'half-breeds'. Bound in 1/4 leather over cloth boards. Extremities show light rubbing and edgewear, the rear joint (at rear endpaper) starting though the binding remains sound. Without exception the maps are in immaculate condition with only the rare occasional short closed tear to one side of one of the maps. The contents remain surprisingly clean and unmarked. The first report contains seven maps, some with coloring. The second volume contains four maps and three plates. These are part of the seventeenth volume of the Journals of the Legislative Assembly. Some of the maps in the first volume fold out to considerable length - nearly six feet. One of them (Pigeon River) has a tear at the top resulting in the loss of a couple of letters. All the rest are in good condition. Streeter 3725 and 3726. Sabin 18958 and 31937. Graff 1893. Handsomely bound in half calf over marbled boards with spine labels.
