The spine was spilt at the front joint and I reglued it with archival glue. The binding is tight. Sold as it. Front hinge has been repaired with tape. Missing front end sheet. Title page loose but present. Missing plates, IV, VI, XIV, XXVIII, XXIX, XXXV, XXXVIII, XXIX and pages 239-240.. Priced as is. An aged and mis-handled copy of one of the most extraordinary early works in both geology and western americana. There are still a few stunning color plates present. Monograph only. No atlas.

Reprint of the 1882 edition with original title page facsimile. Illustrated slipcase. Slipcase is cracked 6 inches along the top edge, 4 inches along the bottom edge and has moderate soiling. Atlas sheets have minor creasing to the corners (in the margins) but are otherwise clean. Overall good condition. The atlas includes twelve maps by Dutton, eleven in color, and 12 views by Holmes and Moran, with five in color and five tinted. Farquhar 73: "One of the greatest, if not the very greatest of all Grand Canyon books....The atlas, containing the superb panoramic views by William H. Holmes and a drawing by Thomas Moran, is a rich portfolio of art as well as a collection of maps and an exposition of geology." The portfolio that holds the maps has matching binding; approx. 20" tall and 17" wide; wear, tear, and chips to spine tips of portfolio; maps are folded in half and open are approx. 19" by 33"; they are in excellent condition but some are missing; there should be 23 total; missing are, 2, 4, 6, 13, 14, 15, 18. Front board detached. Ex-library copy. Interior is clean and free of markings save a few library markings. Tight binding; marbled endpapers (1" x 1/2" chip missing from front endpaper) and edges. This copy was used by Wallace Stegner in his research for "Beyond the Hundredth Meridian", although there is no indication within; no marginalia or owners signature. "Beyond the Hundredth Meridian" was unlike any of Stegner's previous works, requiring research spanning 5 years. Stegner often consulted with his mentor Bernard DeVoto during the writing. At one point Stegner writes to DeVoto, "I really am scared to death to let anybody see this, for some reason. Maybe I know the thing stinks." Boards of atlas have cracked gutters, heavy chipping and loss to 3" at foot of spine, all edges have heavy wear and soiling; first endpaper is detached from text block and has moderate chipping to fore edge; views in the atlas have light foxing and minor offsetting, but are still vibrant. Illustrated. Elephant Folio. Brown cloth with gilt lettering. Book condition: A good ex-library copy with rubbing bumping, light soiling and white numerals on backstrip. A few deep scuffs in backstrip barely permit spine to show. Gilt is still bright. Small college library stamp on title page. Rear endsheet has another stamp and faint evidence of removed pocket and date due slip. Internally clean and bright. Short tear in top of second page. A 1/4 inch strip of Atlas Sheet XVI, Panorama from Point Sublime, is stuck together in the gutter, slightly affecting image.
