Good in full leather with marbled endpapers and book edges, leather is split at the top and bottom of the front outer hinge and a two inch split in the center of the rear outer hinge, pages are in very good condition with some browning and pages at the back are slightly wrinkled.

Ownership signature of Olivia Bernard Sparrow: Born Lady Olivia French Acheson in ca. 1778 at Mullaghbrack, County Armagh in  Ireland,  she was the daughter of Arthur Acheson, 1st Earl of Gosford, and married Brigadier Robert Sparrow in 1797, settling at Brampton Park in Huntingdonshire. In 1834 she opened a church day school in Leigh. The children of Hadleigh were also admissible to the school, and thus Lady Sparrow and Herschell ensured that many of the poorer children of Hadleigh and Leigh were taught to read and write. Nice association copy between two Irish women interested in education.

Johnson and Co 1811 Third edition of "the most important work on general pedagogy to appear in this country between…Locke's Thoughts…and Herbert Spencer's Essay in 1861" (Muirhead, The English at School, 57). This edition, like the second, was revised by the authors, as enumerated in the "Advertisement to the Third Edition." It contains additions and omissions, and the chapter on Arithmetick has been revised. Contemporary calf, neatly rebacked, spines stamped in gilt. . Two volumes, octavo. . With one plate in Volume I, opposite p. 56, and two folding plates at the end of Volume II. Light dampstain to lower edges of covers, extending to text occasionally. A good copy. Maria Edgeworth's sister Anna Beddoes' copy, signed by her on the front pastedown of Volume I, and on the title-page to Volume II. She later gave the volumes away, adding in the first volume "to C.H. Muirhead calls this "the most important work on general pedagogy to appear in this country between…Locke's Thoughts …and Herbert Spencer's Essay in 1861" (The English School, 57). The Edgeworths were the preëminent disciples of the educational theories of Rousseau in England. Slightly later half calf over marbled boards, gilt spine, tooled in compartments, olive morocco label, edges stained red, brown paper endpages. Binding extremities lightly rubbed with slight wear to boards. Two volumes in one, thick quarto. Illustrated with one diagram and two folding plates. Both joints starting to crack, but sound. Itermittent very light foxing, slight offsetting to plates. Early armorial bookplate, ink signature dated 1872 on a preliminary blank. A very good copy.
