With colour illustrated plates and black and white photographs. Green markings on text block edge. Pages and plates remain bright and clear. Slight tanning to upper text block edge and moderate foxing to text block edges. Boards have light shelf-wear with mild bumping and fraying to corners. Gilt lettering is bright and clear. Slight crushing and wear to spine ends. Clipped dustjacket has mild sunning all over. Light edgewear with small tears, creasing, and rubbing. Small closed tear to front panel. Price sticker to front flap.

Neat ink name inscription to the reverse of the front end paper of all volumes. Light foxing to the fore edges of the third series volume. Otherwsie these books are fresh and clean. The set comprises First Series (1928); Second Series (1928); Third Series (1929). The progenitor of the Wayside and Woodland series, first published as one (and subsequently two) volumes in 1895-6. The third volume, dealing mainly with the monocotyledons and a chapter on Orchids, was added by Step in 1929 as part of his overall revision for the New Edition of the work. A bright crisp set. This copy is the same book internally as the 1929 edition, and has the same endpapers, but the cover and wrapper are different, the wrapper has the same information on it as the wrapper from the 1929 edition, but slightly different frieze and picture, so possibly the original sheets in a slightly later cover and wrapper [1930-32].
