First published in the US in 1938, the first UK edition was in 1939, immediate further printing being affected by the war. ... In his introduction, Ford writes about the work "It is the book of an old man mad about writing - in the sense that Hokusai called himself an old man mad about painting." Known particularly for his novels "The Good Soldier" and "Parade's End" Ford founded also the critical journals "The English Review" and "The Transatlantic Review", each of them highly influential in the development of modern literature during the early 20th century. Ford Madox Ford (1873 - 1939) was an English author of most fiction and nonfiction, poet, literary critic and editor of two literary journals. Ford used many variations of his name over the years, and was published as H. Ford Hueffer, Ford M. Hueffer, Ford Hermann Hueffer, Ford Madox Hueffer and Daniel Chaucer. Ford changed his name to Ford Madox Ford in 1919. His material grandfather was the painter Ford Madox Brown and Ford took his new name in his honor. An excellent association - Ford was Gordon's mentor, and she acted for a time as his secretary.
